Winona C. (Compton) Derrick, age 77 of Arnett, Oklahoma passed from this earth on May 12, 2016. Winona, beloved mother and grandmother, was born to Raymond and Lucille (Gott) Compton on May 16, 1938 in Shattuck, Oklahoma.

Following Winona’s birth, her family resided in Arnett, Oklahoma, where she graduated from Arnett High School in 1956.

Winona married Bert Junior Allard in 1955. To this union two boys and two girls were born, Kevin, Kenny, Starla and Cheri. Winona and Junior lived in Texhoma, Oklahoma until Winona moved back to Arnett, Oklahoma in 1964. On June 26, 1971, Winona married Calvin Derrick.

Winona worked several jobs before becoming employed at the Ellis County Assessor Office in 1972. Some of those jobs included baking, ironing, waitressing, working at Appel’s flower shop, and many years of selling Avon. She worked as a Deputy Assessor until she became the Ellis County Assessor in October 1989. Winona enjoyed her job as County Assessor because she loved working with the public and being involved with the community. She retired from the County Assessor Office on November 30, 1998.

Winona was very active within the community. She was the Kiwanis President 1995-1996, member of City Council, member of United Methodist Women, Chamber of Commerce President in 1999 and involved with the Senior Citizens. She was always willing to help in the community when needed or asked. Winona was very involved with her family. She attended grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events and stock shows. She was a very giving person to family members or others in the community. She loved purchasing household items for all the kids and grandchildren. If you ever mentioned that you liked or needed something, she was sure to provide for you.

Winona was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Lucille Compton; four brothers, Max Compton, Gary Compton, Theron Compton, Monte Compton; one sister, Patricia Gann; and husband Calvin Derrick.

She is survived by two sons Kevin Allard of Guymon, Oklahoma; Kenneth (Cheri) Allard of Texhoma, Oklahoma; two daughters Starla (Bruce) Word of Arnett, Oklahoma, and Cheri (James) Cummings of Shattuck, Oklahoma. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; Tiffany (Dereck) Williams, Walter Allard, Calvin Allard, Trevor Word, Chelsea Word, Zane Word, , Joshua (Tanya) Cummings, Caleb (Ashley) Cummings, Matthew Cummings and six great grandchildren, Gavyn Williams, Carsen Williams, Jaylon Cummings, Drew Taylor, Madyn Cummings, and Pierce Cummings. Four step children; Ernie Derrick, Buddy Derrick, Dedra Webb, and Calli Wafford. She is also survived by three sister-in-laws, Joan Compton, Sammie Compton, and Pat Compton and numerous nieces and nephews.
