Seeking a better way of life for their family, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Schick came to Marion, Kansas, around 1900 from the Volga River area in Russia. Fred married Susanna Brunner in Russia. Their son, Henry, had come to America with relatives nine years earlier to see what life was like, and if it proved satisfactory, the rest of the family was to follow.
In 1902 the Schick family came to Oklahoma and homesteaded four miles west of Shattuck. A frame home, fourteen feet by sixteen feet, was built. As one seldom saw a frame house in Russia, the Schicks were quite proud of their home. The house was added to three times as the family increased. The Fredrick Schicks had six children: Gottfried, Henry, George, Fred, David and Katie.
