EMMA LEE STEVENS

October 29, 1927 - January 02, 2018

Emma Lee Stevens, born on October 29, 1927 to Charles and Lou Oma (Shelton) Farris, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 2 at the age of 90 years.

A native of Arnett, Emma graduated from Arnett High School in 1945 and obtained a teaching certificate the following year. In the winter of 1946, Emma married Richard Stevens of Gage and had three children, Lisa, Lance and Gordon whom they raised on a farm west of Arnett. Emma began working in the Ellis County Courthouse. While raising her children, she was truly a farmer’s wife, driving tractors, harvesting and feeding cattle. She continued to have a long career at the Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck as well as returning to the Ellis County Courthouse, retiring in 1989.

Emma’s passion was serving others and the Lord through her numerous activities with the Arnett United Methodist Church. She particularly enjoyed her activities with the United Methodist Women’s group including ‘Meals on Wheels’, the Christmas dinner and numerous other activities helping others.

Outside of her church activities, Emma enjoyed sewing and quilting, often making gifts for others, including hundreds of baby blankets. Emma Lee had quite a green thumb. Always keeping a great yard as well as growing a garden for many years with Rich. In her later years Emma became a big fan of the OKC Thunder and the Texas Rangers. Staying up late to watch her favorite players Nick Collison and Elvis Andrus.

Emma is preceded in death by parents, Charles and Lou Oma Farris; two brothers, Melvin and Darwin Farris, husband Richard and daughter Lisa Stevens, both of Arnett. She is survived by her brother, Kenneth of Canon City; son, Lance Stevens and his wife Susan of Arnett; son, Gordon Stevens and his wife Elizabeth of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Kyle Stevens, Lauren and Nick Crow; five step grandchildren, Hope Suthers, John David Barnett and Joey Barnett, Krista Spurgeon and Janetta Wright; step great-grandchildren, Hadley and Kindrey. In addition, Emma is survived by numerous adopted children, grandchildren, other family and a host of friends.

Memorial donations in memory of Emma can be made to the Arnett United Methodist Church or the United Methodist Woman Organization (UMW).
