Walter Frank Martin was born on November 18, 1929 to Walter and Pearl (Killian) Martin in Dodson, TX. Around the age of 4, his family moved to Arnett, OK - a town he would call home for the rest of his life. Walter passed from this life on April 4, 2016 at his home.
Walter attended Arnett Public Schools from elementary through high school, graduating with the Class of 1948. While in school, he participated in both basketball and baseball. Walter enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1951 and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant in March, 1953. Although he served during the Korean conflict, he was destined to stay stateside when they found out he could type.
After serving, Walter was employed by Robert Higgins at the Ellis County Abstract Co., which he and his brother Clarence later purchased and operated until 2002.
Walter met the love of his life, Glenda Wicker at a dance, and they were united in marriage on September 14, 1957 in Woodward. They enjoyed 58 years of life together. To this union was born Janya Carlene, Jeffrey Wade, Jamie Jaree, Jeri Dalene, and Jyl Renee.
In addition to his work at the Abstract Co., Walter helped local farmers by working their dairies in their absence and plowing fields after the wheat harvest. He was always willing to help anyone at any time.
Walter was involved in many aspects of the community. He was a very proud member of the Ellis County Excise Board for 43 years, a member of the Arnett Kiwanis Club for over 50 years, and a volunteer with the Arnett Fire Department for over 20 years. He also participated in the United Methodist Men’s Organization, the Arnett Band Boosters, and Arnett School Athletics. He was also a member of St. Alban Lodge No. 192 of Arnett.
During his retirement years, he enjoyed helping his wife sell flowers in the family greenhouse. He also enjoyed traveling and visiting his children and grandchildren. He really loved his grandchildren, and in the last few years the addition of his great grandchildren brought many smiles to his face. His hobbies included doing crossword puzzles and watching Oklahoma football and his favorite game show Wheel of Fortune.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Pearl Martin; father- and mother-in-law Carl and Beatrice Wicker; daughter Janya Martin; brothers Clarence, Nolan, Berlyn; sisters Mary and Bessie; and niece Jane.
He is survived by his wife Glenda, son Jeffrey Martin (Deborah), daughters Jamie Martin (Joe), Jeri Walker (Joe), and Jyl Martin; grandchildren Autumn, Amanda, Brittany, A.J., Morgan, Amie, Zachary, Shannon and Janene; great grandchildren Elise, Lila, Jax, Adalyn, and Alivia; sister Ruth; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Arnett United Methodist Church.
