Billye Jean “B.J.” Gray, of Arnett, passed from this life on January 3, 2018 at the age of 88 years, 6 months, and 9 days. She was born to J.B. and Katherine (Hargis) Caruthers in Covington, TX on June 25, 1929. She was raised in the Woodward area, later moving back to Texas, where she graduated Itasca High School with the Class of 1948. She then attended Baylor University and later West Texas State College, earning her Bachelor’s degree in 1955. B.J. was united in marriage to Forrest Gray in 1954 in Amarillo, TX. She lived in Lubbock, Corpus Christi, Whitedeer, and Amarillo, TX where she worked as a high school teacher, volleyball coach, and cheerleading sponsor. B.J. enjoyed watching her beloved Dallas Cowboys, Baylor Bears, and attending sporting events at Arnett and Shattuck. She was a member of the Baptist Church and spent her summers counseling girls at Camp Waldemar for over 40 years, earning many outstanding councilor awards. She also loved to cook from the Waldemar cookbook.
In addition to her parents, B.J. was preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Don Stout, Kenneth Schoenhals, and Bernard Rucker, two nephews, Reed Stout and Randy Woolbright, and a niece, Stacy Caruthers.
She is survived by her five siblings Peggy Schoenhals of Stillwater, Donnie Caruthers and wife Sandy of Frisco, TX, Lou Francis and husband Bob of Williamsburg, NY, Jim Caruthers and wife Mary of Jonesbourgh, TN, and Kathy Rucker of Barstow, CA, as well as eight nieces and nephews, 14 great nieces and nephews, and 15 great great nieces and nephews.
Memorial Donations in B.J.’s honor may be made to the Shattuck Athletic Boosters with Shaw Funeral Home, Box 276, Vici, OK 73859 serving as custodian of the funds.
