Carol Marie McGehee Morris was born on March 10, 1942 in Delta, Colorado. She was the first of six children born to Paul Vernon and Goldie Marie Bowker McGehee. She spent both her childhood and adult life “mothering” her brothers and sisters. She was always concerned with everyone else’s well being.
She attended grade school at the Fairview School near Olathe, Colorado and later graduated from Central High School in Grand Junction, Colorado. As a teenager, Carol was baptized into The General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn and she strove her entire life to fulfill this commitment.
On June 25, 1960, Carol married Leroy Morris in Grand Junction, Colorado. The two spent most all of their time together doing the things they loved, including fishing, camping and spending time with family and friends. They lived in the Grand Junction area until moving to San Antonio, Texas when Leroy was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. They returned to Colorado, living near Pea Green, Colorado.
Carol was an amazing aunt who enjoyed spending time making life fun for everyone she was around. She continued her nurturing spirit with her nieces and nephews until she was able to have a child of her own. Justin was born on September 17, 1975, fifteen years after Leroy and Carol were married.
Carol devoted her life to Leroy and Justin. Everything they did was enjoyed as a family, such as hunting, camping, searching for Indian artifacts or just spending the day having a picnic. Easter was a favorite of Carol’s and the entire McGehee family.
She appreciated everything about life and saw the world as no one else did. She taught her family to see the beauty in the smallest of things. Her goal in everything was to make sure everyone was having fun. She loved to scare her friends and family and she loved to be scared. She spent a lot of hours just laughing.
Leroy, Carol and Justin moved to Vici, Oklahoma in May of 1995. It was a decision that would complete a chapter in their lives. Justin met Sonya Poulson and they were married on June 6, 1998. Sonya and Carol became good friends and Carol considered Sonya a daughter, not an in-law. The Morris and Poulson families immediately bonded. They worked together harvesting wheat, weekend trips eating out and spending most holidays together.
On September 15, 2002, Justin and Sonya had Carol’s first grandchild. Lauren was Leroy and Carol’s pride and joy. Unfortunately, Leroy passed away on April 24, 2003. After this loss, Carol focused her time and attention on her little family. “Grammy” and Lauren developed a very special bond and spent nearly every day together. They went on many adventures, including walks in the “jungle” at Grammy’s house and picnics behind the baseball field. Lauren had sleepovers with Carol and took “road trips” daily.
Carol was blessed with a second grandchild on May 10, 2007, with the birth of Maddox. Carol called him “Grammy’s little man”. Although their time together was short, they developed a sweet connection. As her health failed, Maddox would lie beside her and smother her with kisses.
She loved walks in the country, rides in the back of a pickup, thunderstorms, and mother nature. She was a talented artist, many times using old sawblades as her canvas. She also had a knack for using the most unique items to decorate her home. She could turn something as simple as a bird nest into home décor. Her caring, compassionate and optimistic spirit will be greatly missed by so many who’s lives she touched. In her final days, she was surrounded by her family, brethren and friends, including a very special childhood friend, Betty Ashby.
Carol was preceeded in death by her husband Leroy, parents, Paul and Goldie McGehee, and father and mother-in-law, Virgil and Esther Morris. She is survived by her son and daughter, Justin and Sonya of Vici, OK; two grandchildren, Lauren and Maddox of Vici, OK; brothers, Paul McGehee and wife Beverly of Grand Junction, CO and Gary and wife Linda of Delta, CO; sisters, Donna and husband Wendell McCracken of Pauls Valley, OK, Linda and husband Merl Morris of Grand Junction, CO and Rhonda and husband John Morris of Vici, OK; a special stepmother, Matilda McGehee of Vici, OK and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
