Woodward, Okla. — Today we mourn the passing of our beloved wife, sister, mom, grandma, aunt, & friend. On November 13, 1944, James and Alwilda Sheppard Evans gave birth to a beautiful baby girl whom they named Margaret Alwilda after her mother. She was raised and completed her schooling in Chandler, OK. She was baptized into the faith on February 19, 1963 by Bob Tibbit of the Parkland Church of the Firstborn. While attending college, she met the love of her life Benny K. McDonald. Benny knew of her and sought her out for a first date at Willard Hall on the campus of Oklahoma State University. From that first date began a great romance that became official on May 22, 1965 in Parkland, OK. Their first son Michael Wayne was born March 26, 1967 in Stillwater, OK. Their second son, Steven Lyle, made a surprise entrance into the world in the backseat of their car, delivered by Benny, on February 23, 1970 while they were living in Durant, OK.
After living in Stillwater, Omega, Woodward, Durant, Anadarko, Ft. Cobb and Clinton over a 9 year period, they moved back to Benny’s hometown of Vici, OK where they settled. They were surrounded by many family members, church members, and friends. Margaret was compassionately devoted to helping others within the community through her many talents including sewing, wheat weaving, painting, photography, baking, and quilting. She very much enjoyed helping young students in 4-H with their record books, crafts, and sewing projects, including her boys. After having grandchildren, her greatest passion became teaching her grandchildren how to sew and bake. Even though Margaret raised two boys, she thoroughly enjoyed making dance costumes, pageant dresses, and Halloween costumes for her granddaughters. She also enjoyed attending athletic events including basketball and baseball, and people could always see her on the sidelines keeping an official scorebook. She was always very involved in the Turner Quilting Club, Secret Sisters, and continued her creativity with her wheat weaving and joined the National Association of Wheat Weavers & Straw Artists.
Margaret has won many awards for her various talents including sewing, baking bread, and being honored by the Great Plains Museum for her wheat weaving. Upon retirement, Benny and Margaret both shared the love of traveling. They have been to many great places including Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and the Caribbean as well as many other trips around the United States. She and Benny even bicycled hundreds of miles across Oklahoma and Texas highways. Her many talents, strength, courage, and her love of helping others serve as a testament to the person she was and the person we all strive to be.
Margaret passed from this life to be with her Lord on June 8, 2011 in her loving home. During her last days, she so appreciated the comfort, love, and support she received from her church brethren. She was preceded in death by her parents James and Alwilda Sheppard Evans, her brother James W, and her sister Alta Blackburn. Those remaining to cherish her memory are her devoted husband Benny of 46 years; her 2 sons Mike and wife Michelle of Woodward, OK, and Steve and wife Dana of League City, TX; her grandchildren Ashley, Matt, & Amy McDonald of Woodward, OK and Megan and Ryan McDonald of League City, TX; her sister Frances Woodruff and husband Sam of Oklahoma City, OK; her brother Tom Evans and wife Terry of Lake Eufaula, OK; one great-grandchild, Teague; 4 nieces, 5 nephews, other family, and a host of loving friends. As a wife, mom, and grandma, she is greatly loved and will be deeply missed.
Some people come into our lives, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never the same.
The family of Margaret McDonald would like to extend our deepest appreciation for all the cards, flowers, food, and support during our time of sorrow and remembrance. Funeral Services were held Sunday, June 12 at the Church of the Firstborn, Vici, Oklahoma with burial following at Sunnyside Cemetery. Services arranged by Shaw Funeral Home, Vici, Oklahoma. Condolences may be made to the family and video tribute viewed at shawfuneralhome.net.
