James Dale Liston, Jr., the son of the late James Dale and Lola Jane (Bartell) Liston, was born on May 8, 1934 in Alva, OK and passed away peacefully while family members sang him into heaven on March 7, 2021 at the age of 86 years, 9 months and 27 days.
Dale grew up in Vici, OK and graduated from Vici High School in 1953.
As a young man Dale enjoyed lighting fireworks with his father every 4th of July, spending time with his family and traveling for the wheat harvest. As an adult, he was an avid water skier and swimmer and loved boating and gardening. Dale was always learning something new and had many hobbies throughout his life including bow hunting, photography, guitar and piano.
He enjoyed participating in church as a young man and throughout his life was a member of Taloga First Baptist Church, Vici First Baptist Church and Woodward First Baptist Church.
Dale enlisted in the Navy December 6, 1955. He was serving as a Seaman Apprentice when he was honorably discharged on November 30, 1959.
Dale was united in marriage to Betty Lou Noble on May 21, 1960 in Taloga, OK. To this union 3 children were born: Beverly Rene Cline, Jacqueline Fay Thornton and Michael Dale Liston. They were married, until Betty’s passing, for 24 years.
He attended Oklahoma Panhandle State University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Agriculture in 1963. He completed a Master of Education Degree from the University of Missouri in 1972.
He taught High School Vocational Agriculture in Shawneetown, IL, Weaubleau, MO and Thayer, MO.
Dale moved his young family back to Taloga, OK in 1972 and purchased the Apco service station. He served the community for over 20 years delivering fuel to area farm owners and answering the door on Sundays when a neighbor needed fuel.
Dale married Verna Mae Schafer on May 10, 1985. They met on the Square Dancing floor and were married 35 years, residing the first 5 years in Taloga, OK and the remainder of his life on his family farm near Vici, OK. Dale truly loved living on the farm.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Wilma Jean Nutter; Virginia LaVaughn Young and 2 brothers, Clayton Eugene Liston; and Robert Keith Liston. He is survived by his wife Verna Mae Foust Liston of the home, one sister, Sandra June Gilreath and her husband James of Watonga, OK, two daughters, Beverly Rene Cline of Midwest City; Jacqueline Fay Thornton and her husband Robert of Tulsa, OK, one son, Michael Dale Liston and his wife Alicia of Hanahan, SC, one step-daughter, Donna Hobbs and her husband Steve of Wylie, TX, two stepsons, Leslie Schafer and his wife Jolynn of Wylie, TX; Donald Ray Schafer and his wife Julie of Princeton, TX. Additionally he is survived by eight grandchildren, Melissa Sue Evertson and her husband James of Plano, TX; Mark Anthony Cline, Jr. of Abiline, TX; Joshua Aaron Thornton and his wife Courtney of Broken Arrow, OK; Emily Grace Thornton of Edmond, OK; Kylee Liston; Kaden Liston; McKenzie Cox and Kylie Cox all of Hanahan, SC, twelve step-grandchildren, Michael Anderson; Joe Hall; Joshua Hobbs; Matthew Hobbs; Zachary Hobbs; Stephen Hobbs; Tiffany Hughen; Lesley Schafer; Kourtney Schafer all of Wylie, TX, Cindy Schafer of Santa Fe, NM; Lane Utely of MI; and Monica Bailey and husband Shawn of Prrinceton, TX. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandson.
