Our dear husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa Jerry Lynn Ladd went peacefully to his final resting place on Wednesday, Sept 13, 2017, at the age of 84 years and 9 months. He was the 5th of 6 children born to Jess Daniel and Myrle May (Burr) Ladd on Dec 14, 1932 in the Cestos community right east of where he lived the rest of his life.
Jerry was a wonderful Husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa to his family. He attended the Richmond school from 1st to 12th grade graduating with the class of 1950. Ronald Sumpter drove his school bus and one day when Jerry was pretty young Ronald told him, “Jerry you’re a case,” and Jerry replied, “well you’re a John Deere.” He loved farming from a very young age and it stayed with him to the end. He used to say there was nothing he liked better than running a tractor. He drove the school bus and coached a baseball team for Richmond for a few years.
On June 8, 1952 Jerry married Joan Cunningham in her parents house east of Vici by her Grandpa Rollin Cunningham. They built a little house in Jerry’s parents yard, it didn’t even have a bathroom so they used an outhouse. Later they moved into Jerry’s parents house and lived on the same red hill their whole lives.
Jerry enjoyed quail hunting with neighbors and a good bird dog. He and neighbor Ed Ritterhouse once bagged 100 quail in one day. He and Joan ran a Grade C dairy in the early days. Jerry used to say he married Joan because she could milk cows. He spent many days hunting coyotes with others and their dogs.
In 1961 at age 29, Jerry started his custom harvest business and continued for 33 years. He kept several of the same customers for the entire 33 years. He cut in Texas, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska and Montana through the years and employed 70 different people, some being uncles and cousins. He harvested wheat, corn, barley, sunflowers, milo and beans. One year he harvested popcorn and brought a bin load home to eat. He depended on Joan to cook and wash for all the hands. Connie, Jay and Ricky drove wheat trucks, combines and tractors to help wherever needed. Jerry always said Connie was his best truck driver. He received the “Outstanding Young Farmer” award for recognition of Exceptional Progress in Agriculture and Contribution to the Community from the Vici Chamber of Commerce.
Jerry’s cattle would patiently wait for him every morning for their pellets. He loved feeding his cattle and they were always well fed. In his later days he enjoyed feeding the quail milo every day and watching the humming birds at the feeder. Although he was a quiet man, he never hesitated to tell others how proud he was of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Jerry accepted the Lord on Dec 14, 1966 and was a faithful servant till the end. He was very generous and would always help others during a death or illness with farming their ground or cutting their wheat.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Myrle Ladd, brother Burton Ladd, and sisters Lucille Hildebrand, Ima Jean Button, and Juanita Moss.
