Lavonta Rose Sutton Kenrick affectionately known as “Rosebud” was born on January 26, 1939 to Arapaho Chief Harry Arthur Sutton and Sally BlackBear Sutton at Geary, Oklahoma. She departed this life on June 8, 2021 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
She attended school at Eagle City and Canton. Lavonta worked many jobs as a bartender and then maintenance at Opportunies Inc. before she retired. Lavonta had two children with George Green Jr. She married Lowell Dean “Curley” Kenrick on January 19, 1961. From this marriage 5 children were born. She loved playing handgame, powwows, traveling especially to Wyoming for the Arapaho ceremonies and played softball for many years. Lavonta left this earthly camp for her heavenly camp on June 8, 2021.
Preceding her in death were her husband Curley, and companion Waylon Lynes, parents, daughter Marilyn Marie, siblings Arthur Warren Sutton, William Ray Sutton, Viola Sutton Hatch, Cora Sutton ScabbyHorse-Querdibitty, Patricia Sutton Walker, Charlene Sutton Lime, Georgia Sutton Roberts, and Kenneth Paulsen.
Surviving family include her siblings, Nany Sutton, Wilda Gould, Allen Sutton Sr., Ava Benson, Marcella Armijo, Frank and Joann Murray. In-laws Joe Kenrick and Billie Mayes. Children Corwin Sutton, Billie Sutton, Donna Kenrick Thomas, Arthur Kenrick, Melvin Kenrick and wife Sherry, Elvin Kenrick and wife Susan. Grandchildren Robyn Russell, Melissa Johnson and husband Kris, Dallas Kenrick and wife Hannah, Lowell “Sunni” Kenrick, Erica Winters and husband Aaron, Erik Kenrick, Alex Kenrick, Aaron Jackson, Patrick Kenrick, Abby Kenrick Sparks and husband Josh, and Sidney Jackson. Great-grandchildren Austin Johnson, Hailey Johnson, Adam Johnson, Malachi Johnson, Nevaeh Johnson, Evie Kenrick, Eli Kenrick, Hendrix Sparks, Zoey Sparks. Many nieces, nephews, and grandkids, she was especially close with Monica Allen, Steven Benson, and Sandy Cavett. The AllRunner and Fanman families plus many more relatives and friends.
Wake services will be held at 6:00 p.m., Sunday evening, June 13, 2021 at the Canton Native American Gym. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, June 14, 2021 at Canton School’s Multi-Purpose Building with Elvin Kenrick and Reverend Gerald Panana officiating. Interment will follow at the Canton Indian Mennonite Cemetery under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home, Canton, Oklahoma. Condolence may be made online at www.piercefuneralhomes.com.
