Dorothy Lee (McClaren) Conine, only child of Albert Earnest McClaren and Lila Maud (Swank) McClaren was born in Woodward, OK. on August 20, 1929. She passed from this life at the age of 93 years on February 27, 2023 in the Vici Nursing Home where she had resided since 2012.
Dorothy grew up west of Vici, OK. on the Cree Ranch Road and her school years were spent in the Vici Public School System where she was an honor student. On July 31, 1947, Dorothy was united in marriage to Russell Eugene Conine in Woodward, OK. Their life together of nearly 59 years was blessed with a daughter Linda Kay and a son Russell Lewayne.
Their first residence was established in Woodward, OK. where Russell worked for Lee Wilson Construction rebuilding houses after the historic April tornado and Dorothy worked at the TG&Y store. They also lived in Vici, OK., Higgins, TX., Canadian, TX. and Oklahoma City, OK. before returning in 1958 to make Woodward, OK. their permanent home. Along with her duties of wife and mother, Dorothy was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. as a telephone operator. She was an avid stock car racing fan and attended the Friday night races in Woodward and the Saturday night races in Enid for many years with family and friends. Dorothy was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother and grandmother whose memory will always be cherished.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Russell and other loved ones. She is survived by her daughter and son in law Linda and Van Armstrong of Weatherford, OK. and her son Russell Conine of Yukon, OK., three granddaughters Monica Waggoner and husband Troy of Foss Lake, Stephanie Creveling and husband Kyle of Gretnna, NE. and Kelli Conine of Norman, OK. Five great grandchildren, six great great grands, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
RUSSELL EUGENE CONINE was born May 21, 1928, northeast of Vici, Okla. to Everett and Mable (Cory) Conine. He passed from this life on June 20, 2006 in the Woodward Regional Hospital.
Russell was raised on the family farm in Woodward County and attended the Diller and Sible Country Schools for grades one through six and Vici Schools through high school.
Russell E. Conine and Dorothy L. McClaren were united in marriage at Woodward, Okla. on July 31, 1947, and have made their home in Woodward since 1958. They had two children; Linda Kay and Russell Lewayne.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents Everett and Mable Conine, four brothers; Duane, Calvin, Roy and Ross Conine, and one sister Rita (Conine) White.
Survivors include his loving wife Dorothy, daughter Linda and her husband Van Armstrong of Dodge City, Kan. and son Russell L. Conine of Oklahoma City. Three granddaughters; Monica Waggoner of Woodward, Stephanie and her husband Kyle Creveling of Omaha, Neb., and Kelli Conine of Norman, Okla. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.
Russell worked in the oilfield for a few years working on drilling rigs and seismograph crews. He later started a business painting structures of different types. He also worked for Western State Hospital as a maintenance worker for several years. While working there he started selling cars on a part-time basis for Brown Motors and later sold cars full time. Russell was a security guard at the Terra plant for approximately 10 years and then returned to selling cars for Vassar Motors.
Russell loved the many horses and dogs that he raised over the years. He was a big car racing fan (especially Dale Earnhardt’s # 3 and Junior’s # 8) and he liked to watch the OU Sooners football team.
Services were held Friday, June 23, 2006 in the First Christian Church, Vici, Okla. with interment following in the Sunnyside Cemetery. Services arranged by Shaw Funeral Home, Vici, Okla.
