Iona Catherine (Bennett) Hunter, daughter of Gale Ward and Clara Beatrice (Nordquist) Bennett was born October 8, 1931 at Eagle City in Blaine County, OK. She passed from this life June 28, 2020 at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 20 days.
Her school years began at Eagle City until 1943 when her family moved west of Canton, OK. She then attended the last semester, of 7th grade, at the CON 6 school located eight miles West of Canton before completing her education at Canton Public Schools, in 1949.
Following graduation from high school, she was employed at the PMA office in Taloga from April to November of 1951 until the job was eliminated from the program. In December of 1951, she was hired by the SCS Dewey County Conservation District Office, in Taloga.
In August of 1953, while residing in Taloga, OK., Iona met Daniel Osborn Hunter. They were united in marriage at the Methodist Church parsonage in Taloga on April 23, 1954. Their home was established on the farm where Daniel was raised in the Cestos community. On May 25, 1955 a tornado, destroyed their home and another house was moved onto their farm. A few months later, at the age of 24, Iona made her confession to accept Jesus Christ at the Seiling Christian Church. In 1976, the family transferred membership to the Taloga Christian Church. A son, Darrel Duane born September 4, 1957, and a daughter, Debra Diane born September 24, 1961, blessed their home. In 1963 they moved from the farm to a new home Daniel built in Taloga.
Iona was the secretary for the Soil Conservation Service and the Dewey County Conservation District, a career spanning 46 years. She accompanied Daniel and Darrel to the country helping them with different jobs, for a year, until Daniel’s health failed, Iona and Darrel became his caretakers until his passing on July 28, 2003. She enjoyed crocheting afghans, making several for friends and each grandchild. She also enjoyed embroidery work, completing a beautiful state bird quilt for her daughter. In 2006, Iona become a member of the Taloga precinct Election Board and spent many enjoyable times with her co-workers. The Senior Citizen Board of Taloga made her the temporary treasurer, in January 2009, and officially elected, in April 2009, holding the position for several years. Iona was active in the Senior Citizen Center by playing cards two nights a week; and as a volunteer, one day a week, taking money for the noon meals.
