Billy Ray Roper was born October 11, 1939 at Oakwood, Oklahoma to Ray Alexander Roper and Mae Ellen (Stringer) Roper. He departed this life on Sunday, November 7, 2021 at Yukon, Oklahoma.
Bill went to Oakwood School all 12 grades and graduated in May of 1957. Bill married Leota Mae Hole on September 21, 1956. To this union three children were born, Larry, Mary and John. Bill worked for Ed Boden of Boden Oil from 1957 until December of 1967 when he and Leota purchased the Mobil Station and small grocery store from Laverne Hart. They ran that business for one year. Oakwood school then was closed and they didn’t want the kids to ride to Taloga so they moved to Chester, Oklahoma in January of 1969 and Bill went to work for Western Butane out of Seiling. In 1972 they moved to Watonga and Bill went to work for Koch Industries headquartered in Wichita, Kansas but he worked out of the office at Medford. He worked in several positions through the years finally becoming an Area Representative monitoring plants. He retired from Koch on January 1, 2005. After retirement Bill enjoyed talking and listening on his amateur (Ham) radio through several nets.
Bill leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 65 years Leota; son Larry and wife Christy, daughter Mary and son John; four grandchildren, Amber Branscum (Marshall), Derek Roper (Ashlee), Ian Roper and Lauren Flynn; five great-grandchildren, Paislee Branscum, Colton Branscum, Noah Branscum, Greyson Roper and Ashlyn Roper; Bill was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and dearly loved each of them. Bill also leaves a host of friends, and relatives. One brother, Everett (Lydia); four sisters, Lou Ann Peterman (Wesley), Elsie Peterman (Pete), Dianna Anderson (Jerry) and Mary Sue Dale (Billy); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at the Watonga Christian Church with Pastor Adam Lovitt officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Memorial Cemetery with services entrusted to Pierce Funeral Home of Canton. The family kindly encourages friends to wear masks to the service if they so choose, but they are not required. Memorials may be made to the Watonga Senior Citizens or the Watonga Christian Church.
