Marvin Lee Quattlebaum was born April 5, 1935, on the family farm to Elton Ross Quattlebaum and Ruth Ann Zimms. Marvin attended school at Leedey and graduated in 1954. Marvin’s work ethic began at an early age while helping his dad on the farm. This was the true calling of his heart – to be a farmer. While in high school, he worked on the Camargo bridge. After graduation, he worked with the bridge crew building bridges on I-40. Marvin started dating Erma Darlene Kauk in 1953, and they were married May 22, 1955. They were married 65 ½ years.
Marvin and Darlene lived in Wewoka, Oklahoma, while Marvin built bridges, then later moved to Oklahoma City where Marvin worked for a furniture store. While there, two children were born to this union – Donna Lee in 1957 and Douglas Lee in 1958. In 1960, Marvin and Darlene moved to Leedey and went into the propane business with Darlene’s dad. In 1962, they purchased Kauk Propane, and owned and operated Leedey Gas & Oil for the next 53 years. In 1982, their son Doug came into the business, and in 2015, they sold out to their grandson Kent.
Marvin continued farming after his retirement. He enjoyed checking and feeding his cows everyday and driving the tractor. Marvin loved people, especially his family. He enjoyed watching the grandkids and great grandkids in all their activities. He loved to restore old gas pumps and little tractors. Marvin always had bubblegum in his pocket for the kids and loved seeing their faces light up when gave them a piece. Marvin loved life and wasn’t afraid to live it. That was evident when he went skydiving at the age of 75 with his grandson Kent. Marvin was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Leedey, where he was a deacon, usher, Sunday School teacher, RA leader and chairman of the Calf Round-Up Committee that donated calves to Boys Ranch Town. He was inducted into the Dewey County Hall of Fame in 2014, and he and Darlene received the Gladys Smith Award from Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children for their years of support. Marvin also served on the board of the Leedey Medical Clinic.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Elton and Ruth, infant twin brothers Gale and Dale, an infant brother Dean, and his daughter Donna. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Darlene, of the home; one son Doug and his wife Connie of Leedey; sister Agnes Wing of Guymon; seven grandchildren Kelly Manke and her husband Brandon of Watonga; Randy Smith of Edmond; Amanda Johnston and her husband Rusty of Glenpool; Brady Smith and his wife Chelsea of Oklahoma City; Kent Quattlebaum and his wife Samantha of Leedey; Donny Smith and his wife Candy of Leedey; and Brandy Thompson and her husband Taylor of Leedey; 12 great-grandchildren plus another coming any day; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Leedey Medical Clinic or Baptist Boys Ranch Town c/o Shaw Funeral Home; P.O.
