Vernice Lorene Ragan Daily was born April 15, 1926 to Joseph Melton Ragan and Effie Fitzhugh Ragan. She passed from this life April 29, 2019 at the age of 93 years and 14 days.
Vernice was the 16th of 17 children. Vernice was born at home in Cooperton, Ok. She attended elementary school in Sedan, Cooperton and Snyder. Her family were sharecroppers during the depression. They moved often when she was a child, and they lost two homes to fire. Vernice remembers packing up the whole family in the truck and going to different farmers' fields and picking cotton. They would spend nights in the truck, while mom and the older girls kept everyone fed over a campfire. It was not an easy life, but they had a large family, and she said you just never knew who would be sharing your meal or spending the night in your home. Being one of the youngest she had many nieces and nephews older and the same age as her, so she had lots of built in playmates.
The family moved to Marshall when Vernice was in 8th grade. She did not get to go to high school because they didn't have enough money for books, so she dropped out and started working around the home. During WWII she also spent lots of time at her older sisters' homes acting as a baby-sitter for various nieces and nephews.
Right after the war was over Vernice met John Charles Daily in Hennessey OK, where she was working as a waitress. They married Feb.25, 1947. Together they raised three boys, Gary Ray Daily, Charles Darrel Daily, and Robert Wilson Daily.
Vernice spent her married life as a mother and homemaker. She helped with her sons’ activities, and she kept the family home and garden. She canned a huge garden every year, and she sewed most of the clothes her family wore. Vernice was also an Avon lady for many years.
Vernice and Charles made their home in South Coffeyville, OK from 1959 until 2007. At that time they moved to Taloga so that Darrel could help care for them. Charles and Vernice were married just short of 63 years before Charles passed away in 2010. She continued to reside in Taloga until this past August when she moved into an assisted living center.
Vernice met her savior at a Billy Graham Crusade in the 1950’s. While in Taloga she attended The First Christian Church faithfully.
Vernice was preceded in death by her beloved husband Charles, all of her brothers and sisters, and 1 son, Darrel. She is survived by son Gary Daily of South Coffeyville, OK, son Robert Daily of South Coffeyville, Ok, daughter in laws Karen Kimball of Taloga, and Carol Harris of Oklahoma City, and one sister in law, Sue Daily
Vernice has 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews. She will be missed by them all, as well as her many friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at the Taloga Christian Church. Burial will follow at Mound Cemetery.
