Dorothy J. Byrd, 81 year old Woodward resident, died Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Woodward Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at the Free Will Baptist Church with the Reverend Daniel Sweet officiating. Interment will be held at the Mound Cemetery in Taloga. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
Dorothy Jean (Ward) Thomas Byrd was born on January 7, 1930 in Taloga, Oklahoma to Delbert Melville and Inez Belle (Cox) Ward. Dorothy was reared in the Taloga area and graduated from Taloga High School. In 1960 she was united in marriage to Richard E. Byrd in Woodward, Oklahoma. Dorothy and Richard made their home in Woodward where they remained for the next 50 years. Dorothy worked at El Palacios Mexican Restaurant and as a CNA at Grace Living Center.
Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also spent time knitting, quilting, reading and completing word puzzles.
Dorothy attended the First Assembly of God Church.
She is survived by her children, Jim Thomas and wife Carol of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Bruce Thomas and wife Sheri of Fort Collins, Colorado; Bob Thomas and wife Melissa of Edmond; Richard Byrd and wife Sherie of Woodward; Jerry Byrd of Woodward; Mark Byrd and wife Susan of Moore; 19 grandchildren, Sarah Beaudin and husband Chad, Jason Thomas, Amanda Thomas, Tony Thomas and wife Daphne, Rick Thomas and wife Sandy, Ben Thomas, Dan Thomas, Bradley Thomas, Elizabeth Thomas, Rebecca Harrison, Shanna Byrd, Brandon Byrd, Anthony Byrd and wife Trish, Chase Byrd, Shelby Byrd, Tanya Byrd, Dallas Harper, Cody Cannon, and Courtney Byrd; 15 great-grandchildren, Allie Beaudin, Katie Beaudin, Samantha Beaudin, Kevin Beaudin, Tyler Beaudin, Jackson Thomas, Alyssa Thomas, Morgan Thomas, Donavan Thomas, Kayleigh Thomas, Ryland Ready, Alex Byrd, Alyssa French, Asa French, and Audry French; three brothers, Leon Ward of Pueblo, Colorado; Loyd Ward of Fountain, Colordo and David Ward and wife Lola of Woodward; several nieces, nephews other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Calvin Ward, husband Richard Byrd, and one son, Tommy Thomas.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
