Seiling – Mabel Gilchrist, 87, died late Saturday at a Seiling hospital after a long illness. The funeral will be at 11 AM Tuesday at the First Christian Church there with the Reverends Irving Stanke and Ewel Vaughan officiating. Burial will be at Brumfield Cemetery directed by Redinger Funeral Home. The casket will be open at the church one hour before the service and will remain closed after the service.
She was born April 26, 1899, in Shawnee and in 1917, married Ben Slemp. He preceded her in death. She had worked for Oklahoma Hardware Company in Oklahoma City for 19 years and on September 10, 1944, married Henry "Hank" Gilchrist in Raton, New Mexico. They made their home there until 1948 when they moved to Seiling where she was a member of the First Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Hank; a step – daughter, Irene Harwell, Arlington, Texas; 11 step – grandchildren; 16 step – great – grandchildren; and eight step – great – great – grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a daughter, a brother, a half – sister and two step – sons.
Memorials may be made to the Area Medical Foundation through the funeral home.
