George B. Estus, age 94, died Thursday at Seiling Hospital after a long battle with metastatic prostrate cancer. George is survived by his wife, Carol (Sander) of the home and four children: Robert Mullins (Houston, TX), Michael Mullins (Seiling), Steven Estus and wife Janice (Lexington, KY) and Lisa Estus (Elyria, OH). He also leaves behind four grandchildren (Lyndsey Beverlin, Joshua Estus, Emily Estus and Zachary Estus), two great grandchildren (Tony and Parker Wissinger), and four sisters (Evelyn Schroeder (Lyons, KS), Doris Gill (Phelan, CA), Edith Lohr (Rock Port, MO), and Jeanne Pitts (Kansas City, KS)). He was proceeded in death by three brothers: Robert Estus (Las Vegas, NV), Roland Estus, (Rock Port, MO), and Paul Estus (Idaho Falls, ID).
George was born August 29, 1921 near Rock Port, MO, to Homer and Nannie (Looper) Estus. George was the fourth of eight children. George learned farming from his father and worked in the area until he was drafted in 1942. George served in a mortar platoon in the Philippines during World War II. Afterwards, he was invited to become a member of the Army Counter Intelligence Corp, was taught German, and then worked in Germany searching for Nazis among displaced persons. Later, George was posted to the US Northwest, where he once observed an atomic bomb test.
George was honorably discharged from the Army in 1953 and studied radio and electronics. He was living in Palmdale, CA and working for Martin Marietta when he met Carol Sander. They married in 1958 in Las Vegas and lived in Palmdale. In 1964, George joined United Airlines. His work with United led him to live, over the years, in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, and Cleveland. George retired from United in 1984 and he and Carol moved to Seiling. George was active in the Seiling community. He took special pride in his VFW work, including the flagpoles at the Seiling Cemetery and the VFW exhibit on Main Street.
George loved camping, traveling, family, and his country. He enjoyed the outdoors - including hunting, fishing, backpacking and RVing - particularly in the Rocky Mountains. George and Carol’s mutual love of travel led them to visit many countries around the world. More recently, George and Carol split their year between Seiling and Yuma, AZ. George liked to be busy, with projects ranging from gardening to home renovation.
Services will be held Monday at 10AM in the Methodist Church in Seiling with Pastor Dennis Adair and Pastor Norm Wasson officiating. He will be interred in a family plot at Brumfield Cemetery with Jim Sander, Bernie Sander, Mickey Sander, Allen Carter, Don Walker, Bill Pittman, Dale Conner, and Mike Nichols serving as pallbearers.
