Bernice DeLong, daughter of Ward Allen and Grace Helen (Sigman) Barney, was born Dec. 5, 1921, near Oakwood, Okla., in Dewey County. She departed this life early Friday, April 15, 2011, at Seiling Nursing Center. She was 89 years of age.
Bernice was raised in the Oakwood community, where she attended school at Pleasant Valley and Oakwood.
She was united in marriage to Ray DeLong Jan. 15, 1937, in Cordell. They have made their home near Seiling, where they raised their three sons, Don, Tom and Bob.
In 1956, Bernice began working for Bivens Drug. She worked 12 years for Harry Bivens and 36 years for Ken Johnson before retiring in 2004. She was selected as Business Woman of the Year in 1997.
Ray and Bernice were active supporters of the Seiling School and attended nearly every athletic, FFA and other school event. They were named Honorary Seiling Wildcat fans in 2002. She was a member of First Christian Church.
She is survived by three sons, Don DeLong and wife Gynith of Caldwell, Idaho, Tom DeLong and wife Libby of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Bob DeLong of Watonga; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and three sisters, Geneva Norris of Oklahoma City, Jean Hewitt of Canton and Billie Haub and husband Larry of Yukon. She also is survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray, on Nov. 17, 2008; and two sisters, Ada Mae Barney and Leota Crosby.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at First Christian Church with Pastor Dennis Adair officiating. Interment will follow in Brumfield Cemetery.
