The funeral for Carl John Black, 81, will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Oakwood Auditorium. Clyde Irving, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Brumfield Cemetery, Seiling, with military rites by Seiling VFW Post 9524 and Seiling American Legion Post 69.

He was born July 27, 1926, near Altus to George and Ruie Stubblefield Black and died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Mercy Health Center, Oklahoma City.

He attended school at Con 6 and graduated from Oakwood High School. After graduation he entered the Army, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned to Oklahoma, where he married Arlene Dennis July 9, 1949, at Oakwood. She preceded him in death. He worked as a mechanic at Seiling Hardware for many years. He married Gwendolyn Paris, July 26, 1974, at Canton. They made their home southeast of Seiling, where he continued to work as a mechanic and farm. He attended Oakwood Church of Christ until it closed. He was a charter member of Seiling Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 9524, serving in several offices including post commander. He also helped at Oakwood Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Gwen; one son, Mitch, of Canton; three daughters, Janet Kieth of Oakwood, Susan Kegin of Crescent and Dixie Howerton of Enid; four sisters, Clara Chafin and Zela Layton, both of Enid, June Scott of Bloomfield, N.M., and Gracie Fox of Fairmont; two brothers, Duane Black of Ringwood and Harold Black of Oakwood; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, Arlene, he was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
