Funeral services for Mrs. Velma V. Barton Brown 89, Clinton resident, were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2000 in the First Christian Church, officiated by Mr. Doyle Kinney and burial was concluded in the Clinton Cemetery under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home.
Velma Verna Brown was born June 30, 1911 to Robert E. and Ella Ford Barton in Durham, Oklahoma and passed away Friday, November 17, 2000 in her home following an extended illness.
Velma was raised in Durham and attended Bellview and Durham Schools.
She married Mr. "Jim" A. Brown May 21, 1932 in Arnett. They lived most of their married life in Durham except for a short time they moved to Texas where Mr. Brown helped build oil well sites.
Mr. Brown was very active in the Durham area farming, ranching and served on several executive boards. Mrs. Brown followed and helped him to be successful in his many adventures.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown celebrated 65 years of marriage in May of 1997, and he preceded her in death in June 1997.
The couple had retired and moved to Clinton in 1978, and she spent her time gardening, painting and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren.
She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Velma was preceded in death by a son, Gerald; a grandson, Neal Lacey; three sisters, Ruby Rogers, Faye Ridgeway and Willie New; and three brothers, Floyd Barton, Fred Barton and Jack Barton.
She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Lacey and husband Stoney, of Clinton; a brother, Milburn Barton, Riverside, California; a daughter-in-law, Jessie Brown, Arnett; and a sister-in-law, Veta Pearl Barton of Cheyenne.
She is also survived by five grandchildren, Sparla Dick and husband Curtis, Winifield, Kansas; Charlene Butler and husband, Jack, Clinton; Carol Robertson and husband, Jody, Leedey; Gerald Lynn Brown and Gary Olsan Brown, Arnett; two step grandchildren, Thomas Alsup and wife Carolyn, Oklahoma City; and Cindy Follett, Austin, Texas; seven great grandchildren, Shanna Trujillo and husband, Ben, Manhattan, Kansas; Aaron Dick, Emporia, Kansas; Amber, Sarah and Aleah Whitworth, all of Clinton; Logan and Garret Robertson, both of Leedey; three step great grandchildren, Brandi Davenport, Ki Follett and Felisa Alsup, all of Austin, Texas; and one great-great grandchild, Madyson Trujillo of Manhattan, Kansas.
