Nettie Florence Leer passed away peacefully on February 19, 2016 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma after a long wonderful life to the age of 99.
Miss Nettie was born on July 1, 1916 in Apperson, OK to Levi Allen Leer and Ora Ethel Burrus Leer. She graduated from Oklahoma A&M and received her teachers training at Northeastern State College. She taught at Olive High School, Crested Butte Colorado and in Tahlequah, OK. She last taught at Central Elementary School in Sand Springs, Oklahoma and retired in 1981 after 29 years teaching young children there.
She was a woman who taught students integrity, honesty, and respect. In her own words; "she's not a parents teacher, she's a students teacher". Her most cherished times were reading from her favorite books to children in her classes. Although she was a no nonsense teacher; her bark was worse than her bite. She had a great sense of humor, loved to tell stories, and was always quick to smile. She also enjoyed travelling the states by train and documenting her travels with photography. When visiting family she would fill her suitcase with simple surprises for her nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her sister, Irma Dean; niece, Kathy Rhoads, and nephew, Gary Dean. She is also survived by nieces; Sheila Leer, Karen Chengelis, Pam Meunier and nephew, William Leer. She is preceded in death by her brothers Mack William Leer, Harrlei Advrin Leer, Levi Cass Leer, David Clinton Leer, sister Ruth Delores Leer and nephew, David Leer ; and her special friends and caregivers, Glen and Aletha Peterson of Bartlesville, OK.
A celebration of her life is graveside service at Bristow City Cemetery in Bristow City, OK on Wednesday, February 24 at 2 pm. A viewing visitation is available at Stumpff Funeral Home 1600 S.E. Washington Bartlesville, OK during business hours. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to The Journey Home at 3406 SE Kentucky St. Bartlesville OK 74006.
