Lionel Eugene "James" Mayhew

Lionel Eugene “James” Mayhew, 71-one-year old Vinita resident, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa. He was born on October 3, 1946 in Vinita to Delmar C. and Vera B. (Tinnon) Mayhew. James was raised by his grandparents Thelma and Louie Tinnon. He received his bachelor’s in education from Pittsburgh State University and went on to teach school in Kansas City and Coffeyville. He married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Dierker on August 27, 1967 in Coffeyville, Kansas.

James later went to work for the ASCS office and became a regional manager, before retiring just a few years ago. He was also a farmer, raising crops, cattle and hogs on his farm. James loved to hunt quail and was a well-known bird dog trainer in the area. He loved to spend time with his family, take care of his yard and swimming pool. James was a member of the Baptist faith.

Preceding him in death, were his parents and grandparents; brother in-law, Robert Edwards and wife Jewel Dean; and a brother Mikal L. Mayhew in 2016.

The family includes; his wife Barbara of the home; daughter, Niecy Mayhew of Vinita; a son, James Mayhew, Jr. of Claremore; sister in-law, Debra Rogers and husband Larry of Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren, Kasheena Mayhew of Afton, Kelsey Jordan of Vinita and a great-granddaughter Ella Mayhew; brother in-law, Zanvelt Tate and wife Jeannie of Coffeyville, KS. .

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM. on Friday, September 7, 2018 at the Burckhalter-Highsmith Funeral Home Chapel in Vinita.

The celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church in Vinita with Pastor Robert Sanders officiating. Interment will follow at the Manley-Ross Cemetery west of Vinita. Online condolences may be made at www.highsmithfh.com. Arrangements are by the Burckhalter-Highsmith Funeral and Cremation Services of Vinita.
