Jessie Martin Jr., 86, of Nowata, passed from this life on Monday, August 24, 2020 at the Nowata Nursing Center in Nowata. He was born to Jessie Martin Sr. and Covelle (Francis) Martin on July 24, 1934, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma
Jessie attended and graduated from Lincoln High School in Nowata. On August 9, 1953, Jessie married the love of his life, Iris Mayhew. They made their home in Nowata and raised a daughter and four sons. Jessie was a member of the AME Methodist Church in Nowata for many years and was currently a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church of Nowata. Jessie loved his church and church family and was always willing to help at the church. He proudly served his country serving in the United States Army. He was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. Jessie enjoyed coon hunting as a young man and often took friends and relatives with him. He also raised livestock. He was elected to serve on the Nowata City Council and was a Mason. Above all he loved his family. His wife, children, grandchildren, and other family members brought him great joy. Jessie was a good man and made friends with everyone he met. A very well-respected man, that will be miss by his many friends and family.
Mr. Martin is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Sr., and Covelle Martin; and siblings, Ada Johnson, Mayetta Colbert, Pearly Washington, Orenthia Grimmett, John Goree, Robert Goree, and Rita Mayhew.
He is survived by his loving Wife Iris of the home in Nowata, children, Dale Martin of Denver, Colorado, Darlene Hubbard and husband Keith of Nowata, Gary Martin and wife Candice of Terrell, Texas, Lavester Martin and wife Monique of Forney, Texas, Damon Martin Sr. of Midlothion, Texas; nine grandchildren, Rayland Martin, Ischara Martin, Michael Saxton, Kavarie Martin, Noah Martin, Maurice Martin, Damon Martin Jr., Brandon Martin, Elijah Owens; eleven great grandchildren; a brother George Goree , many other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Jessie Martin Jr. will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 29, 2020, at the Benjamin Funeral Service Chapel in Nowata. Burial will follow at Ross-Manley Cemetery in Craig County. The family will be present at Benjamin Funeral Service, 114 W. Cherokee, Nowata, Oklahoma on Friday, August 28, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for visitation.
