Yates was born on January 7, 1949 in Lawton, OK to Leonard W. and Janice G. Yates. He died on October 31, 2014 in Lawton at the age of 65. Don was raised and attended school in Lawton. After graduation from Lawton High School, Don served in the Oklahoma National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1977. He worked as a contractor remodeling houses for many years until his retirement in 2000. Don married Velma E. Steele in 1992 who preceded him in death in 2002. In his spare time, Don enjoyed fishing, watching TV, and being the world's greatest husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents. Survivors include a son, David Sheard of Lawton; a daughter, Velma Reason of Kingston, OK; 2 sisters, Shirley Martin of Lawton and Janice Patton of Oklahoma City; grandsons Timothy Butler and Jonathan Butler of Kingston, and Jeremy Sheard and Kody Sheard of Lawton; granddaughters, Heather Butler and Caressa Sheard of Kingston, and Marie Sheard of Lawton; 6 great grandchildren, and 6 nieces and nephews.
