© Whinery~Huddleston Funeral Service Lawton, Oklahoma Friday, March 25, 2011 James W. Toland GERONIMO Funeral for James W. Toland, 91, Geronimo, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Whinery-Huddleston Chapel with pastor Steve Mallow officiating. Mr. Toland died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, in Lawton. Burial with military honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. James was born April 19, 1919, in , Ark., to John W. and Julie Ann Chadwick Toland. James grew up in Arkansas and left school after the fourth grade to help support his family. He worked on area farms as well as the family farm, where he helped with the crops and drove horse and mule teams. He left home during World War II and served in the Army Air Corp from 1942-1946, where he repaired, inspected and maintained firearms. While in the military, James married Lillian Weathers on Dec. 18, 1943. After the war, he and his new bride established a home in Lawton, where James worked on a paint crew at Fort Sill, and eventually owned and operated Toland Paint and Drywall until his retirement in the early 1980s. > James and Lillian were always very proud of their ability to raise a family without having to live on borrowed money. Life could be lived by working hard and living within one's means. This concept was important to James, and his work ethic, intelligence and love for his family was always enough to make ends meet. After he eventually retired, James built a shop on his place in Geronimo, where he kept himself busy repairing lawnmowers and small tractors. James was rich in friends, raised a loving family, and was blessed with several young individuals who considered him and Lillian as adopted parents. He enjoyed fishing and gardening but was always a father and husband first! Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Lillian; four daughters: Elaine Ybarra and husband, Manny; Wilma Shepard and husband, Danny; Debby Appel and husband, Don; and Donna Neel and husband, Carl; one granddaughter, Tanya Wunder and husband, Nigel; a very special friend, Mike Cornish; and many others who will miss a good friend and neighbor. James was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Arzo Toland; and a sister, Eva Mae Bradley. James' online guest book may be signed and condolences sent at www.whineryhuddleston.com. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in James' name to The Diabetes Association. |

She died on December 4, 2012 in Geronimo, Oklahoma surrounded by her 4 daughters, and was reunited in heaven with her husband James of 67 years who died last March 22. Lillian was raised and attended school in Wapanucka, OK. She attended Southeastern State College in Durant, but moved to Seattle, WA after her freshman year in order to make her contribution to the war effort. Lillian was employed at Boeing Aircraft where she and thousands of "Rosy the Riveters" like her helped keep our war machine operating. She married James W. Toland on December 18, 1943 in Frederick, OK, and spent the next several years at duty locations with him until the end of the war. They settled in Lawton in 1946 with James making a living in the paint and drywall business while Lillian became a full time wife and mother, which was her main purpose in life. She eventually added the titles of secretary and bookkeeper as James' business grew and her help was needed to allow him the time in the field where his attention was more important. As her girls got older, Lillian made an effort to be part of their lives, especially with the Girl Scouts where she maintained her membership for over 53 years. Some of Lillian's hobbies and activities included quilting, crocheting, knitting, sewing, canning, gardening, and active memberships in TOPS and at church. Lillian lived a full and successful life, as a devoted wife and business partner, loving mother and best friend, and as a respected and loved neighbor and member of her community. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husband James; brothers, Harold and David Weathers; and one sister, Arlene McDowell. Survivors include her daughters, Elaine Ybarra and husband Manny of OK, Wilma Shepard and husband Danny of GA, Debby Appel and husband Don of NY, and Donna Neel and husband Carl of OK; a granddaughter, Tanya Wunder, her husband Nigel, and her only, highly anticipated great granddaughter, Elizabeth, all of PA; a brother, Richard Weathers and wife Doris of OK; one sister in law, Gerre Weathers of AZ; and some special, longtime friends, Helen Crow, Evelyn Phillips, Mike Cornish and D'Ann Ingram. The family would like to send their sincere appreciation to Aspire Hospice of Walters for their love and care these last few months that allowed Lillian to remain at the home that she shared with James and her family for over 40 years.
