He was raised in Richmond, Virginia where he attended the local schools, graduating from Richmond High School. In 1947, at the age of nineteen, he joined the US Army where he had an illustrious career, retiring with over twenty years of military service. He served in many places throughout the world, including one combat tour in Korea and in Japan during the Japan Occupation. He also served in Germany and several stateside posts including Fort Sill, OK where he met Johnnie Higgins in 1957; they married five years later in Duncan, Oklahoma in 1962. After his military retirement his family called Lawton home. He attended Cameron University earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Technology Information in 1971. After graduation he was recruited by the State of Oklahoma where he worked for twenty years in job placement until his retirement. He enjoyed being with his grandkids and taking them fishing; he also enjoyed yard work, which he was very good at as long as his wife Johnnie was giving him directions. The other two great loves he had was the love for Oklahoma (he wouldn't take one step outside his beloved state) and also the military and those who served; he always wanted to be surrounded by soldiers and would do anything for them. He is preceded in death by his wife Johnnie Nelms; both parents; one brother Lindsey Nelms. He is survived by his son, Albert K Nelms III, of Anchorage, AK; daughter, Cynthia K Howell and husband Lewis, of Austin, TX; step-son, Chuck Adair and wife Kay, of Sun City West, AZ; grandson, Ronnie Carmichael, of Augusta, GA; two granddaughters, Crystal Howell, of Austin, TX, Abigale Kron and husband Blake, of Anchorage, AK; three step-granddaughters, Stephanie Tallent, of Yorktown VA; and Charlotte Lippincott, of Port Jefferson, NY; and Miste Adair, of Denver, CO; great Grandson, Jordan Carmichael, of Augusta, GA; great granddaughter, Mackenzie Kron of Anchorage, AK; two step-great grandsons, Ryan Tallent, of Garner, NC, Jordan Tallent, of Yorktown, VA.
