William Welford "Bill" Layton

William Layton was born on December 21, 1927 in Rock Hall, Maryland to Harry W. and Bessie M. [Dowling] Layton. He died on December 2, 2010 in Lawton, Oklahoma at the age of 82.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Reverend Phil Seeton, officiating.

Burial will follow with Full Military Honors at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A prayer service is scheduled for Monday evening at 7:00 PM in the Whinery-Huddleston Chapel, with viewing at the funeral home on Sunday and Monday.

Bill was raised and graduated from high school in Maryland.

He enlisted in the US Navy within a month of turning 18 and served until 1946 when he transferred to the Navy Reserves.

He married Josephine “Jodie” Heppler on June 21, 1948 in Oklahoma City.

Bill was re-activated at the beginning of the Korean Conflict in 1950, and transferred to the 45th Division where he remained till 1960 when he resigned his commission to devote more time to the orthotics business he and Jerry Meyers started in 1958. He started his own business, Lawton Brace and Limb Company and Bill’s Family Shoes in 1966 at his new facility located at 27th and West Gore Blvd, which remains owned and operated by his wife and son Harry today.

Bill retired from the business in 1977 and re-enlisted in the National Guard in 1978. He returned to active duty in 1981 and remained until 1987 when he retired at the age of 60 with 24 years of military service.

After his retirement, Bill became the Director of Retired Affairs for the Oklahoma Air & Army National Guard at the request of Major General Don Ferrell. While in this position, he established an annual meeting at Camp Gruber that continues to be held today.

Outside of his military and professional career, Bill was active as a usher, Extraordinary Minister, and Lector at St Barbara Catholic Church; lost a mayoral race to Wayne Gilley who promptly appointed him to be the director of the Lawton-Ft Sill Soapbox Derby as well as several additional committees and community function boards including the Lawton Metropolitan Area Planning Commission.

He enjoyed fishing, auto racing, building model boats and ships, and above all, loved his family- especially the time he spent telling stories to his grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter-in-law, Donna.

Survivors include his wife Jodie of the home; sons, Anthony W. Layton and wife Beverly, Thomas W. Layton and Harry W. Layton and wife Leslie, Joseph W. Layton and wife Heidi all of Lawton; daughters, Jacqueline Bellamy and husband Thomas of Blair and Joan Bivins and husband John of Edmond; grandchildren, Stefanie Snyder and husband Justin, Connie Chelenza and husband Nicholas, Raymond Daily, Debbie Johnson all of Lawton, Christopher Allen and wife Michelle of Norman, Patrick Bellamy, Samuel Bellamy both of Blair, Matthew Bivins, Michelle Bivins and fiance Joshua Ewald all of Oklahoma City, Ben Layton and Joey Layton both of Lawton; great grandchildren, Brandi, Blake, Hailie, Madison, Summer, Billy, Skylar and Gabriel; brother Lamont Layton and wife Dottie of Maryland and sister Lorean Taylor of Florida.

In lieu of flowers, Billes family suggests memorial contributions be made to: St Jude Childrenes Hospital, PO Box 1893, Memphis, TN 38101-9950.

Donna Jayne [Valdez] Layton

Donna Jayne Layton, of Lawton, died on Friday, January 25, 2008, in Lawton. She was born on August 6, 1961 in Germany to Manual and Dorothy Seida Valdez.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Kirk Larkin, officiating.

Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A prayer service will be held at 7 PM on Monday, in the Whinery-Huddleston Chapel. Visitation is scheduled for Monday from 9 AM to 7 PM at the funeral home.

Donna was raised in a military home and spent much of her early life living at duty stations in several areas. She attended junior high and 3 years of high school at Nebraska City, Nebraska, and at the end of her junior year, came to spend the summer with her sister Diana, who was stationed at Ft. Sill.

During her visit, Donna met Joseph Layton who became her best friend. She remained in Lawton, and graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1980. After much effort on Joseph's part, she accepted his proposal, and they were married on June 25, 1980. For the next 321 months, Donna and Joseph remained best friends, spending every spare minute together enjoying the out doors bicycling, running, and hiking. Together, they competed in the Southwest Oklahoma cycling Grand Prix several times, as well as the Oklahoma Marathon, where Donna placed 3rd in 1984. She took great pride in being a mother to her 2 sons, and was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband Joseph, and sons Benjamin David and Joseph Daniel, all of Lawton; father Manual Valdez of Oregon and mother Dorothy Avery of California; sisters Diana Valdez of Texas and Tina Sheppard of Nebraska; brother Michael Valdez of Nebraska, and nephews Justin, Daniel and Stewart. She is also survived by her 5 brother-in-laws, 4 sister-in laws, Tony & Bev Layton, Tom Layton, Harry & Leslie Layton all of Lawton, Jacque & Tom Bellamy of Blair and Joan & John Bivins of Edmond, their families and her two 18-year-old cats.
