© Whinery~Huddleston Funeral Service Lawton, Oklahoma 20 September 2012< Clarence Edwin Felfe Another member of "America's Greatest Generation," Sgt. 1st Class Clarence Edwin Felfe, 93, Lawton, died Wednesday, Sept.18, 2013, at his home in Lawton. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today in Chapel of Peace Mausoleum at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Lawton, with Bob Weger, pastor, Bible Baptist Church officiating under direction of Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Service. Sgt. 1st Class Felfe was born in Thorndale, Texas, on July 25, 1920, to Wilheim O. and Eleonora Dornbusch Felfe. He grew up on a farm in Thorndale, a German-immigrant community, in which the German language was spoken in the home and often spoken in church and in school. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. He was in the second wave to land on Leyte Beach in the Philippines during World War II. He was in the 24th Infantry Division in the Korean War, and at times endured 40- to 60-degree below zero temperatures. It was there that he earned the Bronze Star for bravery in battle. He crossed an open field under fire in order to render medical attention to a wounded soldier. He had many varied tours before coming to Lawton to work in the food service at Fort Sill. He received a Letter of Achievement and the Army Commendation for his dedication and excellent service in that field. He retired after 23Ù years of service in the Army. Sgt. 1st Class Felfe married Margarete Schnellbacher on Feb. 13, 1961, in Lawton. He met Margarete while he was stationed in Germany. After several years, he convinced her to join him in the U.S. They were married for 48 years. He is survived by his brothers: Walter Felfe, of Kerrville, Texas; and Robert Felfe, of Spicewood, Texas; a sister, Erma Niemtschk and husband Eugene, of Thorndale, Texas; nieces: Patricia Busby and husband Jim, of Woodway Texas; Carol Copeland and husband Jerry, of Gatesville, Texas; Ruth Hunziker and husband Butch, of Ridgefield, Wash.; Tamara Veith and husband George, of Portland, Ore.; and Jeanne Felfe, of St. Charles, Mo; nephews: Steven Felfe and wife Kate, of Spicewood Springs, Texas; Michael Felfe, of Corpus Christi, Texas; Russell Niemtschk, of Thorndale, Texas; and Darwin Niemtschk, of Dallas. Sgt. 1st Class Felfe was preceded in death by his wife, Margarete; both parents, Wilheim and Eleonora Felfe; brothers: Ernst Felfe and William Felfe; sisters: Ottilie Amanda Phillips and Esther Alice Olsen; nephews: Karajan Felfe and Hank Lee Felfe; and niece, Becky Felfe. Many thanks go to neighbors Roberto and Miriam Valentin and their family for the love and support they provided for many years. Special thanks to Manuela Green of Florence Night & Day for her love, dedication and exceptional care for our loved one for three years, until the very end of his life. Many thanks also for the excellent care given more recently by Kerry Hill, Mitch Beaudouin and Louvenia Simon, also of Florence Night & Day. The family also wishes to recognize the compassionate and loving care provided by the exceptional staff of Promise Care Hospice of Lawton: Kathy, Marla, Melissa, Jennifer, Christine, and Terresa. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. today at Chapel of Peace, Sunset Memorial Gardens In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to one's favorite pet organization. |
