James L. "Jim" Brown

Funeral service for James L. "Jim" Brown, 84, of McAlester, Oklahoma, former Lawton, Oklahoma resident, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 21, 2004, at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church with Rev. Foy Conrad, former pastor of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, officiating.

Mr. Brown died on Monday, May 17, 2004, at his home in McAlester, Oklahoma.

Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.

He was born on July 21, 1919, in Apeatone, Oklahoma, to William Payton and Caroline [Richardson] Brown. He was raised in Chattanooga, Oklahoma, and graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1938.

He married Wilma Marie Gray on December 23, 1939, in Walters, Oklahoma.

They lived in Lawton and worked in wholesale groceries until serving in the Navy in World War II. He began working for ARKLA Gas Company in Lawton in 1950. He worked for ARKLA Gas Company in Lawton, Chickasha, and Altus, and retired after 34 years as a district foreman.

Jim and Wilma retired to Bugtussle, Oklahoma, where they have lived for the past 20 years.

Jim was a charter member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, which he helped build.

He was an avid fisherman and never met a stranger. He enjoyed traveling, OU football, and western movies. He built two of his own houses in Lawton. He loved animals, especially his little black dog.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, James William Brown and Anne of Glendale, Rhode Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Joe Clemons of McAlester, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Jay Truly of Anadarko, Oklahoma, Brandi Pratt of Kennett, Missouri, Jeri Truly of Apple Valley, California, Paul Brown of Covington, Rhode Island, Shelly Martell, Leah Brown, and Amy Brown, all of Glendale, Rhode Island; eleven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
