LAWTON - Pioneer Oklahoma educator B.H. "Burney" Brewer, 96, of Lawton died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, in a Lawton hospital. Service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Dr. Don Davis officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be held in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Brewer was born July 29, 1906, in Harrisburg, Pickins County, Indian Territory, the first child born to Burney Letcher and Roy Electa Maynord Brewer. He married Flora Engler on Nov. 25, 1932, in Edmond where both were students at the University of Central Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 1995.
Mr. Brewer earned his degrees in education and administration at the University of Central Oklahoma and the University of Oklahoma. He was a combat veteran of World War II, serving g with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. Following the war, he taught and was high school principal at Velma-Alma schools until 1959, when he joined Cameron University as Dean and a member of the history and geography faculty. He retired in 1972.
In 1997, the Brewer's established the B.H. and Flora Brewer Endowed Professorship in Instructional Technology at Cameron. They were Lifetime Cameron President's Partners and members of the Cameron Alumni Association. He was a member of the Lion's Club, Oklahoma Education Association, Comanche County Retired Teachers Association, and a Shriner.
One of eight children, he is survived by his brother, Bryan Eugene Brewer of Sequin, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by six brothers and a sister.
