Lawton, Oklahoma September 17, 2009 Charles Leon Sweatt Charles Leon Sweatt, SGM USA (ret.) was born Aug. 12, 1946, in Colorado City to Roy E. and Dora N. [Tedford] Sweatt. He died Sept. 17, 2009, in Lawton, Okla., at the age of 63. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at the New Post Chapel. Burial will follow at Fort Sill National Cemetery, with full military honors, under the direction of Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Service. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Charles was raised and attended school in Colorado City. He joined the Army after graduation and served his country with distinction in Vietnam, Korea, Germany and here at home. Charles married Linda Suzanne Buckley in The Old Post Chapel at Fort Myer, Va., on May 4, 1985. He retired from the military in 1994 having received numerous decorations and awards, including the Bronze Star Medal with Valor Device, a Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal w/ OLC, Army Commendation Medal w/ two OLC, the Vietnam Service Medal w/ three Service Stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/ Palm. In addition, he earned a Professional Development Ribbon, completed drill sergeant training and completed Sergeant Majors Academy. Charles went to work for the civil service in 1997 and was awarded the "Superior Civilian Service Award" at his retirement this year. He belonged to the Fort Sill Golf Club, and while stationed in Germany, the Warrant Officers and Sgt's Mess of the 8th Regimental RTC (British Royal Army). He was a computer addict, enjoyed reading and playing with his grandchildren. He was devoted to his family and his country. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roger L. Sweatt; brother-in-law, Cleve Chambers; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary and Robert Buckley; and sister-in-law, Carol Jean Earl.Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Eric K Sweatt and wife Caprice of Loveland, Colo., Roy D. Sweatt and wife Theresa of Greeley, Colo., and Ronald A. Sweatt and wife Celeste of Loveland, Colo.; grandchildren, Deric J., Andrew T., Spencer G. Myranda R., Chance A., Kaylie, and Hallie and "T", all of Loveland, Colo., and Kimberly M. of Greeley, Colo.; sister, Sandra M. Chambers of Snyder; sister-in-law Jonetta Sweatt of Big Spring; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joann and Hal MacMinn of Interlachen, Fla.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald W. and Linda Earl of Toledo, Ohio; nieces, Lisa Chambers and family of Coahoma, Melissa and Kevin Kill and family, Bonnie and David Haims and family and Connie and John Spitznaugle and family, all of Toledo, Ohio; nephews Randy and Sue Earl and family and Kenneth Earl, all of Toledo, Ohio; two aunts; one uncle; numerous cousins; and many friends and colleagues.
