James A. Holland

ENID - The funeral service for James A. Holland, 87-year-old Enid resident, will be 9 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2011, in Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home Chapel. Chaplain Donald W. Ailsworth will officiate. Burial will be 1 p.m. in Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, Oklahoma.

James was born June 14, 1923, in Denison, Texas, to Howard and Pearl (Kennedy) Holland and died peacefully April 20, 2011, in Greenbrier Nursing Home. He grew up in Ada, Oklahoma, and attended Ada High School. Shortly thereafter, on May 29, 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force. He served for 24 years, obtaining the rank of chief master sergeant at the time of his retirement on January 31, 1966. He served with the 1503rd Army Air Force Base, 8th Air Force in the European theater of operations, including air offensive over Europe and Normandy. He was awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, American Defense Service Medal and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars.

On October 24, 1944, he married Mary Patteson in Ada, Oklahoma. The couple were stationed at various military installations around the world. After his retirement, the couple made their home in Midwest City. He and Mary moved to Enid in 2008 to be closer to family.

He is survived by his daughter, Anita Holland of Las Vegas, Nevada; his sons, Dr. Paul Holland and wife Nannette of Glendale, California, and David Holland and wife Andi, of Enid; five grandchildren; one brother, Carl Holland of Sacramento, California, and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary, in 2010; and one brother, Glen Holland.
