Rodney Alan Geerdes
March 31, 1949 - October 23, 2014


Rodney Alan Geerdes age 65 of Purcell, passed away Thursday, October 23, 2014 at the V.A. Hospital in OKC. Rodney was born March 31, 1949 in Mooreland, OK.

He was the 2nd child born to Homer Paul Geerdes and Ova Ethel [Powders] Geerdes.

Rodney grew up in Purcell and graduated from Purcell High School with the class of 1967. After H.S. he attended one year at the University of Oklahoma. In 1971 he married Sandra Gutt and that same year he enlisted into the U.S. Navy. While in the service he played the drums for the United States Navy Band. Rodney proudly served his country for over three years before he was honorably discharged in 1974.

Upon his returning home to Purcell, Rodney took a job working as a Surveyor for the Guernsey Company working with his father. After many years as a surveyor, he went to work for the Oklahoma Highway Department in Purcell. Then lastly he worked as the grounds and building maintenance man at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Purcell.

Throughout his life, Rodney loved music and was a gifted musician. He loved playing the guitar at church but his passion was playing the drums. He enjoyed collecting and was a collector of various antique memorabilia. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, his wit and quiet personality. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by: Parents, Homer and Ova Geerdes.

He is survived by: Daughter, Laura Milligan and husband John of Purcell; Son, Shane Geerdes of Purcell; Sister, Ovetta Vermillion and husband Ed of Purcell; Six grandchildren, Ian Milligan, Jordan Young, Austin Short, John Paul Milligan and wife Janna, Michael Milligan and wife Cynthia and Stephen Milligan; One niece, Colleen Bradshaw; One nephew, Aaron Vermillion; Several cousins and a host of friends.

Graveside funeral services will be 11:00 am Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, OK. Arrangements are by Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
