Coree Letitia Steele

July 18, 1928 - February 9, 2023

On the evening of February 9, 2023 at the age of 94, Coree Letitia Miller Steele peacefully entered the pearly gates of Heaven at Ten Oakes Assisted Living Center in Lawton, Oklahoma to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Coree was born on July 18, 1928 in Cushing, Oklahoma to Kelly and Connie Miller. Coree was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington Elementary and High School in Cushing Oklahoma graduating in June 1947. Immediately following high school she attended Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma and while attending Langston she met the love of her life, Dorsey Steele and the rest is history. They were married in 1953. Shortly after that, Dorsey was drafted in the Army. To this union four children were born: Linda, Orland, Donna and Darrell.
During their marriage, they traveled extensively, Colorado, Washington State, Georgia, Maryland, Oklahoma and one overseas tour in Germany 1969-1971.
Coree devoted herself to her childrens early years, and later obtained her Bachelors Degree in Science from Cameron University in 1976. She worked various jobs throughout her career and ended her career working with the Lawton Public Schools. She retired in 1994.
Coree was a devoted and faithful member of Barnett Chapel AME Church, for 58 plus years and was active until her health started failing. She was under the leadership of the current pastor Reverend Garland Hall. She was a life member of the 12th Episcopal District Womens Missionary Society, past President of the local Missionary society, Past President of the Barnett Chapel Lay organization, was a member of the city-wide usher board, and Senior Usher Board emeritus.
Coree was also a devoted member in the Lawton community, where she was a member of the Lawton Mountain Metro Ambucs, Chamber of Commerce and Red Coats, League of Democrat Women Voters, Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Life member and past vice president of NAACP, voter registrar of Comanche County. She attended Comanche County Commissioners meeting and was instrumental in keeping the county jail from being moved to the Haggar Slacks site near Ranch Oakes. She was a member of the Citizens Police Academy and Graduate of the 2000-2001 Leadership Lawton. She was the recipient of the lifetime membership to the 12th Episcopal District Missionary Society.
Coree was the ninth of nine children and is preceded in death by her seven brothers and one sister, mother, and father. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Dorsey Steele and daughter Donna McLean Coree was the proud grandmother of Anthony Jones, Angela Steele Proctor, Zola Steele, LaDonna Meade, Cortney Rhodes, Darius Steele, and Daniel Steele. She has ten great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
