Kenneth "Ken" W. Smith

April 4, 1932 - July 4, 2016

Kenneth (Ken) W. Smith of Oklahoma City, OK passed away on July 4, 2016 at the Oklahoma Veterans Center Norman Division after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Ken was born on April 4, 1932 in Hugo, OK to Willie Jean and Hearn Smith. Ken was the son of a Methodist minister and the youngest of seven children. He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings, Oteka, Riley, Charlotte, Jean, Talmadge and Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Emma Smith; his children, Terry Smith, Janet Rickard and husband Tim, Nancy Hauck and husband Chuck, Joel Smith and wife Susan; and step-children, Pam Helms, Natalie Simer, Doug Simer and wife Valerie. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Betty Aven; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ken served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired from the City of Oklahoma City after 30 years of loyal service. Ken was very close to his siblings. He loved his family and friends dearly. Ken and Emma had a lake place and he loved going there and fishing. He enjoyed dancing as well. A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 7, 4:00pm at Mercer-Adams Chapel with burial on Friday in Ft. Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, OK. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to all of the staff at Veterans Center in Norman and Dr. Mark Adams for the kind and compassionate care that Ken received while he was there. They would also like to thank the staff of Valir Hospice for their care at the end. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association/Oklahoma City, 2123 N. Classen Blvd., OKC, OK 73106, in memory of Kenneth Smith.
