Lester Mayes
March 27, 1942 - January 17, 2019
Lester Mayes was called home to Glory on January 17, 2019 at 12:53 AM while resting at the Lawton-Fort Sill Veteran Center in Lawton, Oklahoma.
The youngest child of Sam Mayes and Flossie Frederick Mayes was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on March 27, 1942. In Orangeburg, he started his walk with God at Olive Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he accepted Christ as his Savior. He graduated from Orangeburg-Wilkerson High School in 1961. He then attended South Carolina State University (SCSU) where he met and later married his forever love Carolyn Douglas. While in college he pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity before graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics.
After college, he joined the United States Army and achieved the rank of Captain during the Vietnam War. Upon being honorably discharged from service, he and Carolyn decided to reside with their son, Dwayne, in Lawton, Oklahoma. He worked as a licensed Real Estate Broker and educator to many successful realtors across the state of Oklahoma.
Lester took great pride in protecting his family and standing up for his beliefs. He had a love for fishing, music, dancing and telling jokes. He will be remembered for his love of reading, especially the Holy Word.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Carolyn D. Mayes; his parents, Sam and Flossie Mayes; his siblings, Elizabeth (Walter) Carroll, Julia (Joseph) Powell, Calvin (Isabella) Mayes, Earnest (Estelle) Mayes, Francis Reed, Samuel Mayes, Jr., Annalee Coley, Johnny Mayes, Mary Rodgers, and Beau Mayes; and brother-in-law, Samuel Stroman.
He is survived by his three children: Carolyn Davis of Cowpens, South Carolina, Dwayne Mayes of Omaha, Nebraska, and Leslie (Ricardo) Nieves of Alpharetta, Georgia; nine grandchildren: Leslie (Tasha) Mayes, Erica Davis, Katrina Davis, Marcelous Mayes, Isaiah Mayes, Sydney Nieves, Taylor Nieves, Riley Nieves, and Trystan Nieves; six great-grandchildren; his sister Birdell Stroman; sister-in-law, Mary Douglas and a host of other relatives and close friends.
1 Corinthians 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
