Sterling Wayne Lea

September 22, 1940 - November 11, 2017

Sterling Wayne Lea of Lawton, Oklahoma, died on November 11, 2017 at his home at the age of 77.
Sterling was born September 22, 1940 in Clovis, New Mexico to the late Alfred and Ruby Lea. He grew up and went to school in Amarillo, Texas and was an active member of the Boy's Club. Sterling honorably served in the United States Army and retired in June 1979 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. His awards and decorations included the Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal with two service stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Sterling volunteered at a Crisis Hotline and served as a security guard from 1979 until he retired in the early 1990's. He loved car races and bingo and could always be found at the Lawton Speedway. Sterling also loved sports and was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers.
Preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Ruby Lea; one brother, Jim Lea and one daughter, Tina Newman and husband Kerry Newman, Sterling is survived by his wife of thirty-two years, Phyllis Lea; his four children, Ruby Kenyon and husband Dale Kenyon of Lawton, Oklahoma, Robert Lea and wife Jennifer Lea of Coppers Cove, Texas, Hope Farmer of Amarillo, Texas, and Theresa Lea of Lawton, Oklahoma; his four step-children, Randy Ipock and wife Frances Ipock of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tim Ipock and wife Angela Ipock of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Cindi Harrell of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Sandi Lehew of Lawton, Oklahoma; one brother, Alfred Lea of Springtown, Texas; one sister, Sharon Hargraves and husband Bob Hargraves of Florida; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
