Burl Horton

SFC (Retired) Burl Horton, age 87, of Lawton passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at his residence.
Burl was born on September 12, 1931 in Wynne, Arkansas to George and Portie Lawson. In September of 1948, he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country for twenty-three years before retiring in February of 1971. While in the Army, he received numerous awards, medals and commendations, including a Bronze Star and graduating with honors from the 6th Army Food Service School at Fort Lewis, Washington. Burl did two tours in Germany, one tour in Korea and one tour in Vietnam. After retiring from the Army, Burl began a real estate business and several rental properties in both Lawton and Seattle, Washington. He was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Lawton. In his free time, Burl enjoyed visiting with his family and friends, traveling, helping others and especially enjoyed playing music.
Preceded in death by his parents, George and Portie Lawson; four sisters, Ila McCrary, Dovie Marshall, Geneva Matlock and Ellen Wheeler; three brothers, Huey Horton, Jim Horton and Earl Horton and one nephew, Jerry Turrell, Burl is survived by one daughter, Patricia Horton of Lawton; two sons, Billy Horton and Johnny Horton of Lawton; his twin brother, Murl Horton of Colt, Arkansas and the mother of his children, Delores of Lawton along with numerous other family and close friends in Lawton and Arkansas. He will be dearly missed.
The family will have a visitation on Thursday, September 19, 2019 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Service.
Funeral services for SFC (Retired) Burl Horton will be on 11:00 am, Friday, September 20, 2019 at Whinery-Huddleston Chapel with Pastor Steve Mallow officiating, interment will follow at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin.
