Funeral Services for Benjamin Hill, 85, of Lawton OK will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December22, 2022 at Grant Chapel AME Church with Overseer Warren C. Winns , officiating.
Burial will follow at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma with Full Military Honors under the direction of Whiner-Huddleston Funeral Service.
Viewing Will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.at the funeral home. Benjamin Hillwas born on July 13, 1937 to Ben and Winne Hill in Columbia, North Carolina. Ben graduated from high school in May 1955. He attended Cameron University and completed courses at Great Plains Vocational School.
A Veteran, Ben entered the United States Army on May 31, 1972. Ben married the late Eula Hill and the couple were blessed with two children, Bettie and Michael Hill. After the passing of Eula Hill Ben met and married Edith Byers and to this union, he fathered four children: Yelena, Duane, Sr., Ebony and Angelique Byers. Having attained the rank of Sergeant First Class Ben retired from the U.S. Army after 27 years. Ben was employed at Halliburton where he worked as an inspector for 22 years. Bens medals and awards included the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal 60 Device, Five Overseas Service Bars, Sharpshooter Qualification Badge M-14 Rifle, and Meritorious Service Medal. Military Training Courses completed by Ben include Fort Sill NCO Academy, 34th Artillery Audio-Visual Training Aids, Field Sanitation, and USAREUR 155mm Prefire Course.
Ben was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1193 and Prince Hall Mistletoe Masonic Lodge #31. As a member of Grant Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church Ben served on the Trustee, Steward, and Usher Boards, was a member of the Sons of Allen, and he was inspirational if the designing and building of the current edifice of Grant Chapel.
Cherishing Bens memory is his wife of the home, Rev. Edith Hill; daughter, Bettie Bailey of Fayetteville, North Carolina, sons Michael (Jackie) Hill and Duane Byers, and daughter Ebony Byers of Lawton, Oklahoma; sister, Anna Collins of Columbia, South Carolina; grandchildren, Kelly (Justin) Stephens of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, Felicia Williams of Frankfurt, Germany, Darren Bailey, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia, Cortney (Patricia) Hill of Edmond, Oklahoma, Jordan Hill of Austin, Texas, Tatiyonna Means, Nathan Hardin, Desni Giles-Johnson, Teyanna Watts, LeiLani Davis, Aniya Williamson, Duane Byers, Jr., DeYa Byers, Niki Means, of Lawton, Oklahoma, Unique Byers, Dominique Byers, Malique Byers, Anqelique Byers, Anthony Davis, Denaiah Ware; and fifteen great grandchildren.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Winne Hill; his former wife Eula Hill; his daughter Yalenda Clay; his brothers, John Hill, Pugie Hill, Floyd Hill, Dalton Hill, Ray Hill, Pete Hill, and brother-in-law Bobby Byers.
