Joseph Peter Hallet

March 2, 1917 - June 15, 2012

Chief Petty Officer Joseph Peter Hallet, Ret., age 95, passed away Friday, June 15, 2012 in Norman, Oklahoma. He was born March 2, 1917 in Derby Connecticut.

Joseph joined the United States Navy in 1935 and his naval career spanned the pre-war, war, and post-war periods. He started his naval career on the battleship USS Mississippi. In 1940 he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer Radio on the staff of the Commander of Pacific Fleet. In this capacity, he was present for the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, and is listed in the credits of the Walter Lord Book, Day Of Infamy. In 1943 he returned to the US to commission the new Light Carrier USS Cabot, and later transferred to the Light Carrier USSS San Jacinto.

On the San Jacinto, he participated in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Returning to the US in 1944, he helped commission the attack transport USS Marathon and was present for the initial landings on Okinawa in April 1945 and was initially discharged in September 1945. He rejoined the Navy in 1953 and served on the Aircraft Carrier USS Midway and was shore-based in Puerto Rico.

Joseph retired from the military in 1959 and resumed his career for the government as an electronics specialist at Griffis Air Base in New York and Tinker AFB in Oklahoma, retiring in 1976. He enjoyed gardening, swimming at the OU pool, traveling the state of Oklahoma to participate in golf tournaments and talking on his ham radio. He was proud of his hole-in-one shot at the OU Golf Course in 1968.

Joseph is survived by three sons, Dale Hallet and wife Shannon of Norman, Greg Hallet and wife Izumi of Seattle, WA and Doug Hallet and wife Sachiko of Seattle, WA; one sister, Stephanie Kamensky of Hollywood, FL; six grandchildren, Brayden Hallet, Lacee Hallet, Alex Hallet, Sophie Hallet, Ian Hallet and Madeline Hallet. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Antonia (Sosin) Hallet; two sisters; and one brother.

The Hallet Family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, June 18, 2012 at the Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook Street in Norman.

Graveside services will begin at 10:00 am, Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at the Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma.
