Funeral service for Charles Richard "Dick" Fowler, Sr., 83, of Alex, Oklahoma will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 8, 2004 in the Chapel of Sevier Funeral Home. Graveside will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, at the Ft. Sill National Cemetery, Elgin.
Charles Richard "Dick" Fowler, Sr., was born June 4, 1921 in Anadarko, Oklahoma and passed away November 4, 2004 at the Veterans Hospital in Oklahoma City.
His parents were Olive and Jerry Fowler, pioneer settlers who came to
Oklahoma from Tennessee in 1909 and Kansas in 1903. He grew up on his Grandmother Phoeba Wood's farm in Caddo County with three brothers and three sisters. He attended Verden Schools where he participated in Vocational Agriculture programs with Duroc Jersey hogs and Aberdeen Angus Cattle. He showed his animals at many local and state livestock shows. After graduation in 1939, he attended Oklahoma A&M, now Oklahoma State University, where he majored in Animal Husbandry and belonged to the ROTC. Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Army and was
commmissioned a 2nd Lieutenant at Ft. Benning, Georgia. After training he was assigned to the infantry 95th Division attached to General George S. Patton's 3rd Army in the European Theatre in World War II. He participated in battles near Bastogne and for the liberation at Metz. He was awarded the Bronze Star, The Silver Star, Combat Infantry Badge, European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, Victory World War II Medal and a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. After being critically injured by a white phosphorus grenade two weeks before V.E. Day and after many months of hospitalization for skin grafts on his hands and face, he returned to Grady County where
he had been a long time Aberdeen Angus Breeder and a lifetime member of the American Angus Association.
He was married to Lois Lawson and had two sons, Charles Richard, Jr., and Brad Lawson, all of whom predeceased him.
His second wife was Virginia Mickle who predeceased him as well as his
sister, Phoeba Ann and brother, Edward William.
Survivors include two grandchildren: Harley Richard Fowler of Mustang,
Oklahoma and Katlyn Ruth Fowler of Mustang, Oklahoma; stepdaughter, Michelle Pledger and her children, Thomas and Taylor Delk of Oklahoma City; daughter-in-law, Anita Fowler and her son, Curtis Bilyeu, of Rush Springs, Oklahoma; two sisters, Rosemary Mertens of Las Vegas, Nevada and Patsy Ruth Fowler of Oklahoma City; two brothers, Oliver Wood of Tempe, Arizona and John Robert Fowler of Thousand Oaks, California; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Interment will be at Ft. Sill National Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
