© Lawton Constitution Lawton, Oklahoma July 6, 1992 Elisabeth Lucille "Lisa and Betty" [John] Schroeder CAR CRASH KILLS LISA JOHN; REPORTER WAS LAWTON NATIVE Elisabeth John Schroeder, a veteran journalist credited with helping break the Oklahoma County commissioner scandal of the early 1980s, was killed in a single-car accident north of Guthrie, authorities said. Schroeder, known professionally as Lisa John, was headed north on Interstate 35 around 10:18 p.m. Saturday when she struck a cow that was in the middle of the roadway, the Highway Patrol reported. The cow had been involved in a previous accident, but had not been removed from the roadway, Trooper Paul Timmons said in his report. Schroeder's vehicle overturned onto its top and skidded for an undetermined distance before coming to rest in the center of the roadway, Timmons said. Schroeder was pinned in her 1989 Buick Century for 15 minutes before rescuers from the Guthrie Fire Department and a local wrecker service pryed her free. An ambulance transported her to Logan Hospital in Guthrie where she died about 15 minutes later of massive head and chest injuries, Timmons said. Schroeder, a 1970 graduate of the University of Denver, was an assistant professor of journalism at Oklahoma State University. During the weekends, she served as news producer and assignment editor for KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City. Schroeder, 44, was headed to her home in Stillwater when the accident occurred, her husband, Dan, said in a news release. Mrs. Schroeder was born in Lawton in 1947 and was a 1965 Lawton High School graduate. In the early 1970s, Mrs. Schroeder became the first female news anchor reporter with KSWO-TV in Lawton. She worked simultaneously at KSWO and as the Southwest Oklahoma correspondent for The Daily Oklahoman and Times from 1973 to 1980, the release said. She had been credited with breaking the Oklahoma County commissioner probe, which was one of the nation's largest corruption cases involving public officials. From 1980 to 1983, Mrs. Schroeder served as news assignment editor at KWTV in Oklahoma City. In 1983, she began lecturing at Oklahoma State University and working for KOCO on a part-time basis. Mrs. Schroeder's husband, Dan, is chief engineer at KOSU-FM at Oklahoma State. She is survived by her husband, Dan Schroeder, of Stillwater; her mother Erma "Louise" John of Lawton; sister, Ellen John of Lawton; and nephews John R. Hooper, M. D., of Oklahoma City and Chip Hooper of Lawton. Services are pending with Ritter-Gray Funeral Home in Lawton. |
