February 6, 1907 Paulina [Fletcher] Roper Grandmother Roper departed this life January 26, at the home of Mrs. Henry Jewell, 8 miles southeast of Lawton. On the 27th, after a short funeral service at the home, the mortal body amid the sorrows of relatives and sympathizing friends, was borne to its last long resting place at the Flower Mound Cemetery. Her maiden name was Paulina Fletcher. She was born in Bradford CO, New York, December 10, 1820. In her girlhood she united with the Baptist church. During the many years she was permitted to live she looked to the Great Father of us all for protection and care in the conflict of life. In 1938 at the age of 18 she was united in marriage to J. B. Roper, at Troy, Pennsylvania. Of this union were born four daughters, who became Mrs. Vance of Lawton, Mrs. Brandon of Bellaire, Michigan, Mrs. Jewell of Lawton and Mrs. A. J. Kelly, of Okema, Oklahoma. The last mentioned daughter died recently. In 1859 the entire family moved to Beatrice, Nebraska, and were there at the time of the Indian Massacre in 1864. One of the daughters, now Mrs. Vance, being sixteen years old, was taken by the Indians and held in their custody for four months. Mr. Roper died in 1877. Mrs. Roper remained on the farm until 1885, when she gave up housekeeping and went to live among her children, spending a large portion of the time with Mrs. Jewell. After having endured the trials, the vicissitudes and changes and struggles of more than 86 years the weary traveler has terminated her earthly pilgrimage to become henceforth the precious memory of those who received at her hands a mother's love ad devotion and to be held in loving remembrance by her many friends. The bereaved extend their sincere thanks for the assistance and sympathy of neighbors and friends in the hour of their affliction. |
