Owen V. Penland

Funeral for Owen V. Penland, 95, Lawton, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home Chapel with Paul H. Owen, Elder of Lauderhill Congregation, Tamarac, Fla., officiating.

Mr. Penland died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at his home.

Burial will be at Flower Mound Cemetery.

He was born Dec. 26, 1907, in Hickory to James Freeland and Martha Lodene Johnson Penland.

The family moved to Lawton in 1911 and he moved east of Lawton in 1930. He was one of the first students to graduate from Lawton High School in 1925.

He worked for Welch Oil Company for 22 years and also worked for Lawton Monument Company. He was a farmer.

He married Bertha Addaline Carr on June 28, 1937, in Lawton. She died on Feb. 19, 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Louise Guthrie and her husband, Clark, Lawton; a niece, Charlotte Ivey, Lawton; and two nephews: Herbert Hoover and his wife, Judy; and Harold Malcolm Ray, and his wife, Shirley, all of Lawton; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his 15 brothers and sisters.
