Dorotha Lou [Sullivan] Brister

Funeral for Dorotha Lou Sullivan Brister, 84, Lawton, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home Chapel with John Levick officiating.

Mrs. Brister passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013, in Lawton.

Burial will be at Flower Mound Cemetery.

She was born Sept. 17, 1928, in Kiowa County, to O.B. and Colova E. Powers Sullivan.

She grew up in Kiowa County until she was 7 when she moved with her family to live east of Lawton.

She attended Messing School, east of Lawton, before coming into Lawton and graduating from Lawton High School in 1946. During the summer following high school, she attended Oklahoma Women's College at Chickasha. She later continued her education and graduated from Cameron University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in English Education.

She married Joe William Pete Brister on Nov. 17, 1946, at First Baptist Church of Lawton. To this union were born a son, Peter Lynn, and a daughter, Penelope Jane.

Dorotha was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as an operator for several years. She also held several other professional positions during her working career. She taught school at Indiahoma for two years before working at Lawton Public Library as an acquisition librarian. She retired from the library after 18 years.

Mrs. Brister enjoyed spending her time reading and collecting books, as well as traveling and taking reminiscing drives through the country east of Lawton. She loved her "hounds" Berit and Bingo, and cherished spending time with her beloved daughter and granddaughter.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Ronald Webb, of Lawton; granddaughter, Kathryn Frazier, of Norman; special friend, Tracy Curtis, of Norman; two nieces: Debbie Byers and Denise Demastus, both of Cache; a nephew, Monty G. Dodson; four "grands:" Jason Martin, Brandon Anderson, Rusty Frazier and Wilson Curtis; aunt, Ruby Powers Srock, of Shawnee; and many loving cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her son, Peter Brister on Nov. 11, 1972; her husband, Joe William Pete Brister on Dec. 4, 1989; her parents, O.B. and Colova E. [Powers] Sullivan; her sister, Sue Muse; and a niece, Vedenya Dodson Guthrie.

Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice, 1925 W Gore Blvd Lawton 73501 or to the Friends of the Lawton Public Library, 110 SW 4th St., Lawton 73501.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
