Charles "Jack" Akers
August 16, 1923 ~ May 2, 2010


FLETCHER-Funeral for Charles "Jack" Akers,79, Fletcher, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Assembly of God Church, Fletcher, with the Rev. Robert Whitley, and Charles F. Akers Jr., of Caracas, Venezuela, officating.

Mr. Akers died Friday, May 9, 2003, at his home. Burial with military honors will be in Fletcher Cemetery under direction of Hodge Funeral Home, Fletcher.

He ws born Dec. 15, 1923, in Doughert, to Hugh P. Akers and Ida Velma BoBo Akers.

He was raised in Fletcher and graduated from Fletcher High School in 1947.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served aboard the USS Essex air craft carrier during the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign earning 11 stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal, and two stars along with the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged Jan. 18, 1946, as a Seaman First Class.

He maried Dottie Russell on Aug. 21, 1964, in Wichita Falls,Texas.

He worked from 1949 to 1979 in the Office of Logistics at Fort Sill. He was employed by Fletcher Public Schools from 1980 to 1987.

He was a member of Fletcher Assembly of God Church, where he served at a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Luis Hernandez, Monterrey, Mexico; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles F. Akers Jr. and wife Kim, Caracas, Venezuela; a grandson, Nathan Akers; a brother, Virgil Price Akers, Lindsey; and a sister, Loma King, Fletcher.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers: Obal Tomlin and Cecil Tomlin.
