J. J. CHOAT
DIES FROM
INJURIES

——

Car Strikes Him While
Walking In Road East
of Here

James J. Choat, 63, a farmer, was killed yesterday when an automobile struck him as he was walking along the road four miles east of here near his home. The car which hit him was driven by E. W. Tacknie and also contained J. D. Walker as a passenger. Both are employees of the Gladys-Belle Oil Company.
The accident occured about noon yesterday. Choat had gone about a hundred yards east of his house down the road to drive one of his horses which was loose to the house.
Two automobiles came along the road as he was driving the horse ahead of him. The car containing Tacknie and Walker was going east, it was reported, and another automobile containg W. J. and T. C. Van Horn, Grady Harris and Richard Jones was going west.
As Tacknie's car came near, it dodged around the side of the horse and confronted Choat. The automobile and Choat were dodging back and forth across the road to evade each other when the car struck him. It was reported the automobile was going about ten miles an hour when it hit Choat.
He was picked up from the road and taken to his house where he died thirty minutes later. He was bruised about the face and body, and suffered a fractured skull causing cerebral hemorrhages. The accident was reported to County Attorney Riley by Walker and Tacknie.
Choat was a native of Texas. He was born in Shelby county, Texas, on April 10, 1858. He leaves a wife and several sons. Funeral arrangements have not been made awaiting word from relatives but will probably be held Wednesday afternoon at the home with burial in Allendale cemetery.
