Funeral services for Vendel Eben Laster were held Saturday, June 20, 2009 at the Nature Baptist Church in Mounds, OK with Pastor Kevin Woodsworth officiating. Gravesite services were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, in Lehigh Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Bill Weathers. Services were by Leonard and Marker Funeral Home of Bixby.
Mr. Laster was born on September 23, 1920 in Caney, OK to Ed Laster & Annie (Baumert) Laster. He passed from this life on June 17, 2009 in Muskogee, Oklahoma at the age of 88 years, 8 months & 25 days. Vendel had lived in the Coalgate community for several years before moving to the Mounds area about 10 years ago. He worked many years in the construction industry and was a longtime supervisor for the Amis Construction Co. He was proud to have served his country as a member of the United States Army. He was a Master Mason and always loved helping other people. He would often help people in need when he owned a cemetery and when he owned a retail business in Coalgate. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and also loved to travel.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie Gay Laster as well as by 1 grandson; Bobby Owen Yockey, 1 brother: I. D. Laster and 2 sisters; Vidona Pardue & Brownie Viola Vernice. He is survived by 2 sons; Ken Laster of Mounds & Vendel Laster, Jr. of Mounds, 2 daughters: Teresa Yockey of Marble, Arkansas & Margaret Tutton of Glenpool, OK, 1 brother; Dub Laster of Coalgate, 6 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and several other relatives and friends.
Casket bearers are Ken Laster, Kenny Laster, Ken Laster III, Garrett Laster, Omerdoyel Cantwell & Randy Bates.
