COALGATE — Carolyn English Watson passed away at her home in Coalgate, Oklahoma, on March 17, 2014, at the age of 86. She was born on September 25, 1927, in Ada, Oklahoma, to Alan Cortright and Harrie Lee King English.
Carolyn attended the Monticello School and graduated from East Central University. After her marriage to Nolan Watson on December 29, 1956, they moved to Coalgate and purchased the First National Bank, now Shamrock Bank N.A. After his passing on August 4, 1985, Carolyn became the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Bank, retiring as Chairman Emeritus in 2011. Carolyn was a lover of the arts, especially music and literature. Most importantly, she understood the value of blessing others with the gifts she had been given.
Her significant generosity was evident to some, but largely unknown by others. Carolyn loved doing things to assist her community and to give others opportunities to go further, without receiving recognition — the way she wanted it.
Carolyn established the Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation and the Carolyn Watson Opportunities Scholarship Program, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations of rural Oklahomans, which will provide community and classroom enhancement opportunities, as well as educational scholarships for college-bound high school graduates.
Carolyn is survived by family members, including her relatives and her Shamrock Bank family. She is also survived by many loyal and devoted friends, whom she dearly loved, especially Kenneth Keeler and her caregivers, Bessie McInnich, Sue Ellen Watkins, Jacky Cooksey, Violetta Ables and Deanna Cathey.
Funeral services will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at noon on Thursday, March 20, 2014, with interment to follow at Coalgate Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Carolyn’s memory to a charity of your choice.
